Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and new to the Buell world. I'm looking at purchasing a 2005 Buell XB9 CityX that has around 26K miles on it. It's at a used bike dealer for around $3900, but I figured I'd offer him about $3500 and see what happens.

Is this a good price for the bike?
Will this bike hold up and be reliable for much longer, or is it going to have major mechanical issues in the near future?

Thank you for your help.

I wouldn't worry about the mileage, but it should reflect in the price. You could find a better deal pretty easy. I would say $2500 or $3000 if its super clean. Private sellers usually are better for bikes in this range though. Don't let them add on dealer fees and all that garbage, it could double the price!

26K is hardly "high mileage".
I wonder how many years it's going to take before the misconceptions about what is "high mileage" for a bike finally die off. Most modern bikes will run 75-100,000mi w/o any major problems, and that includes sportbikes.
The price should reflect the mileage though. Around here $3500 would be a very reasonable price for that bike. Bike prices tend to vary wildly depending on region so the only way to see if that's a good price in your area is to find other bikes to compare it with; craigslist is normally very good for this.

I'm in the DC area and bought my 05 XB9SX for $2800 with only 8K mi! I'd try to find a better deal.

Like the captain said...the mileage is buy no means high. However i would look for a better price unless the bikes are very rare in your area or you are in need of a bike.

Thanks for all the help. These bikes are really hard to come by right now. I live in MA, and I've searched pretty much all over New England, and people seem to be jacking up the prices around here.

I'm going to keep looking though, but this is my front runner right now.

All depends hows its been cared for. Had a 03 bolt a few years ago that had a bad connecting rod bearing and poor compression on both cylinders at 2900 miles (not 29000). Previous owner knew nothing and never did the first oil change (he admitted this). These are things you wont see or notice until later. If the bike sounds good and is straight go for it. Only thing I would be careful of is the fact it is a used bike dealer. Be sure to get an "Out the door" price.

Sounds like you got a lemon. Remember, it may say "Buell" on the side but deep down inside it's still got a lot of "Harley" in it. :D j/k
It would take a special kind of moron to wreck an engine after 2900mi. A manufacturing defect however, can do it in that or less. Heck, in some ways I prefer higher mileage bikes, ESPECIALLY in older bikes (sitting reeks havoc on carbs and electrical) . Their the ones that have proven themselves and not spent their lives sitting in a garage, leaky old shed or outside in the elements.

I found another one, an XB9S, mileage unknown but it looks absolutely mint. It's a private party and he's asking $3900.

What's a reasonable price to offer this seller?

Depends upon the model year, (again) mileage and mods done. Perhaps it has so much or expensive mods that even for 2003 XB year the price could be very reasonable [confused]
Anyway good luck!
I believe you will need no one's hint when you'll find the bike you will fall in love with and you will not care about the price (perhaps :p if you have enough).

for what it's worth, had a 2006 city cross XB9R in her a few weeks ago. tires, service, etc etc. has 24,677 miles on it and well maintained, never abused, seldom taken to redline, kept out of hot innercity stop and go situations. it still looks great, motor is tight, uses a pint of synthetic oil every 2500 miles or so, runs great, shows little wear either mechanically or cosmetically. just to give you an idea of longevity if these bikes are treated with some respect.
