Nope, for whatever dumb reason. Jeep used one good automatic transmission, and only put it in the Cherokees. Story is, it was already in use when Chrysler bought Jeep, and they just left it there. When they dropped the Wrangler line after 95, YJ, then picked it up again in 97, TJ, it had a Chrysler transmission in it. IDK why when the AW4 was already in the Cherokee and a great transmission. Grands always had a Chrysler transmission, but that was to work with both the V8 and I6, because it was "stronger" lol.

Here's my Jeep.

That looks an awful lot like the quarry at the Badlands in Attica, In.
My Jeep spent a LOT of time there getting the crap beat out of it. :D

MAN, I miss that thing..... [sad][sad][sad][sad]

Yea, I miss mine too. That's actually Camp Gruber ORV park. It's 400 acres of Government land set aside from Camp Gruber military base just for the use of Off Road Vehicles.

Here is the Cherokee Classic that I've been asking about. It's price is high, and I am not sure I am up for the full price of admittance on it. What do you all think price-wise on it? I know the KBB for retail pricing is $9,000 with all the options. My offer was quite a bit higher than that, but he's firm on his asking price.

You can get into a nice Range Rover or other vehicles for around that price, which are at least as much, if not more capable off-road than that, and they'll have all the luxury features standard on it. As I've said previously, I won't be doing much wheeling, I just need the towing capability, extra room and the ability to drive out in fields and woods while hunting. It's doubtful I'll be fording any creeks while hunting in the vehicle, but it's nice to know the vehicle could do it if I wanted to!

Thanks,
-Matt

that price does seem high for a cherokee, I mean sure it has low miles, but its still an older vehicle and will only ever be worth so much........

Yeah, that's my thought. I don't mind paying a premium to a point on a low mileage well maintained vehicle, but I don't think it's worth that much. There is definitely no re-sale value in it at that price, but my plan would be to keep it forever anyways. I thought my offer was more than fair, but we'll see what happens. Sounds like he might have someone else that might be buying it this weekend, so we'll see what happens.

I'm definitely keeping my eyes open for a good condition, lower mileage Cherokee. Specifically a 1999-2001. I would like a Classic or Limited, but would consider a Sport depending on the price and what options it had.

Thanks,
-Matt

A nice Cherokee can be had for 1/2 of that price. That seller is an idiot. It’s a nice Jeep for sure but it’s not made of gold like he apparently thinks it is.

Also, low miles + high age = LOTS of time sitting or very short drives. In my experience, this is often times worse than just buying something with higher miles to begin with. Sitting for extended periods tends to cause some odd problems and short trips are never good on a vehicle.

Getting caught up on what the odometer says is a sure-fire way to overpay for a vehicle. I have 3 vehicles on the road right now; an 04 Saturn Vue (4cyl-5sp, I’m well aware of the problems the other drivetrains have), a 00 Ford Expedition and a 93 Saturn SL2. They have 146,000, 158,000, and 235,000 miles on them respectively. I’ve driven each of them a LOT and they are all trustworthy to anywhere I want to go. Heck, this summer I hitched the camper (travel trailer, not a pop-up) to that 150k mi Expedition and pulled it 5 hours away for a family camping trip. I never gave it a second thought (other than the gas cost, a hotel might have been cheaper-LOL). My point being, how well a vehicle was cared for means 10x as much as the number of miles on it. A 100,000mi Cherokee is barely broken in so long as it was maintained even decently.

As far as the Range Rover, I have $20 right now that says a Rover will not be as reliable and cheap to maintain as a Cherokee, not by a LONG shot.

Try this one. That "should" be close to St. Louis, and a hell of a lot better deal

I think I saw that one during my search. It's closer to me than St. Luis (I'm in NW Ohio). I kind of thought that the price was a bit high based on the mileage. I'll contact them, and see what they say, the big thing would be the care/maintenance history on the Jeep. It doesn't have a CarFax with the ad, so I'll have to look into that as well.

I know, that without a doubt a low mileage car does not equal a trouble-free car. The low mileage plus the ridiculous maintenance history (serviced every 3-4 months regardless of mileage, many times 500 miles) on that 32k mileage one was the reason why I was willing to pay a premium for it. He didn't like my offer, so it's not really an option either way anyways so the search continues. I found one in NY with 46k miles, but it's lifted and has exhaust and intake on it. I'm not sure if I really want to get one lifted or not, and he mentioned that the exhaust was pretty loud.

As far as the Range Rover, I have $20 right now that says a Rover will not be as reliable and cheap to maintain as a Cherokee, not by a LONG shot.

No doubt there! I am mostly worried about the air suspension failing. That is major dollars for repair/replacement. If I can find a Jeep with no rust and not beat to piss, I would certainly consider one with higher mileage. Especially for the right price.

XJ's used an AW trans and it was darn near bulletproof; WAY overbuilt for the size of a Cherokee. however, they do produce a fair amount of heat so a trans cooler is a wise investment.
[up][up]

my kids cherokee has been wheeled hard and maintained well 278,000 miles on the stock engine, trans, case and diffs and runs like new.

Thoughts on this one?

2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Aside from the price being high, what do you all think about it? It's close enough to me where I could check things out and work on them on the price right there. KBB has this listed at $7300-$7800 Private Party, and $9300 Retail value, so it's certainly worth some money, just not the $11k they want for it. I bet they paid somewhere around trade-in for it too when they picked it up, maybe even less if they got it from an Auction. You can see on the CarFax that it was a leased vehicle, so that is something to consider, but the ridiculously low mileage helps ease the pain of knowing it was previously leased. In the pictures it shows well, but looking it over is really the only way to tell.

Are those 'real' Jeep wheels? I don't remember seeing those very often, particularly on Cherokee's, so not sure if those are aftermarket or an optional wheel or something like that for the Jeep? Maybe wheels off a newer / different Jeep model?

Thanks,
-Matt

Those wheels are Black Rock Yuma's: http://www.blackrockwheels.com/products16-17/BlackRockYumaSeries908M

The price is high but the mileage is really low. Which is sometimes a bad thing, just go over it and check for leaks, squeeks, etc. If you test drive it make sure you get a nice "long" drive so you can get it up to temp and make sure it's cold when you first fire it up. Sometimes dealers will warm a vehicle up before someone comes to drive it to mask an cold idle issues.

Thanks for the info on the wheels, I didn't think they were stock, but I have seen them on a few Jeep's, particularly on Wrangler's. I haven't heard of that brand before, are they pretty well known in the Jeep world? Looks like they are about $115/wheel or so?

When I go out to check it over, I'll make sure it hasn't been started / driven before I drive up and check it out to make sure there are no cold start issues. I've had a few other sellers warm them up first before I've checked them out, I passed on those right away. It's a simple task to not warm it up before I get there, but sometimes people don't understand. I've found that dealers normally don't want to deal to much on prices, especially ones that are trying to get stupid amounts of money in the first place. We'll see what happens. I'm going to try giving them a call today, and see about checking it out within the next couple days.

Thanks,

That last one was sold (The white 2000), it sold just the other day. Seems like I am always a day late on a dollar short! The dealer told me they got the full asking price for it. Not sure I believe it, but that is what they told me anyways.

I am going to check this one out in person tomorrow morning: 2001 Cherokee Limited

What do you think about this one? Looks pretty clean from the pictures, but pictures can always be deceiving so I need to see it in person to verify all is well with it. Always difficult getting information out of dealers, as they are just all about selling it, not really talking about what it is and what it might need, etc. What I was able to get out of them is that everything does work, heated seats, PW, PL, power/heated mirrors, 4x4, etc. Supposedly it was in great shape when they got it, and it essentially needed nothing. I think they replaced two tires from the sounds of it, but otherwise it's exactly how they got it. CarFax looks good, nothing sticks out.

Thanks,
-Matt

All of this talk makes me want to share my weekend project...I have an '86 Jeep MJ (Comanche X pickup). Currently, it was the 2.5L I4 with the AX4 transmission in it. This weekend it is getting the AX5 (Unfortunately not the AX15). While the transmission is out, we are replacing the clutch since it has 145XXX miles on it. Not a bad truck. No power, but the think is bulletproof other than the Dana 30 axles. With the "blizzard" we just got here in Indiana, my friend was driving the MJ, and I was in my Hemi Durango...we were getting through where others didn't care to.

My Jeep search is finally over! I went to the dealership today and placed my order for a 2013 JKUR 10th Anniversary Edition. I am SO excited! The wait is going to about kill me though. I'll make a new thread (with pictures of course) when I pick it up. Sounds like I won't have it before April, so it's going to be a long three months waiting for it to arrive!

Anyone else have a JKU on here? Particularly one with the 3.6 liter motor? Since it'll have all the 10th Anniversary edition goodies, it'll likely stay in the stock form for quite some time, if not forever. I probably won't be doing much off roaring or rock climbing, but I know once I have it, that might change fairly quickly!

dang went from 10+ year old jeeps to brand new lol. It has the pentastar v6? Supposedly a good engine...

Yeah, my wife of all people pushed me to the new JKU side of the fence. She just wasn't happy with the condition and prices of even some good condition XJ's. So she gave me the thumbs up to get a JKU. She basically said this is the last car I'll be getting, so I need to get what I want now, as I can't upgrade for a long time, if ever!

They do have the Pentastar motor. Heard lots of good things, just hoping I don't have any issues with it. I am a maintenance freak with everything, so it will definitely be maintained properly, more likely than not over maintained if that's possible, just like my bikes.
