I put the new jugs on my 2003 XB9R. I have the service manual. The only thing between the jugs and the engine case is the gaskets. On the upper part of the head with the valves in it the service manual shows both gaskets and o-rings. The service manual shows 2 o-rings per head. I have them in my rebuild kit. The service manual shows that the o-rings go on first and then the gaskets go on top of them. Because there is only 2 o-rings per head when I put the gasket on its raised up on the side where the o-rings are. So.. my question is this..
Do the O-rings go under the gaskets or on top of them? The service manual shows they go under. My original ones were still on the heads when I removed the gaskets which leads me to believe that this is correct but it just doesn't look right. Thanks..

Yes, I bought the complete Harley Davidson gasket set. It came with 4 of the o-rings. 2 for each head.

OK, here is what I notice. The original gaskets between the jugs and the heads had larger holes in them to accomodate the o-rings. The new gaskets have smaller holes. I am thinking these o-rings definately must go on top of the gaskets.
Anybody?

This is what I am talking about. I found a video with a guy showing the cometic gasket set. I ordered my gasket set from Harley Davidson. If you watch the video you will see the guy talking about not using the o-rings with the new gaskets. This guy is talking about cometic gaskets but I think I have the same scenario. The weird thing is the kit came with the 4 o-rings for the oil pickup tubes. 2 for each cylinder.

I have the 4 for the pushrod covers. I installed them. They are much larger. My cylinder heads definately had O rings on the oil tubes. 2 per cylinder. The stock gaskets had holes large enough to go around the oil tubes with the o-rings on them. The new gaskets have smaller holes and fit the oil tubes perfectly.

My cosmetic kit didn't include them, so I'm not sure about the Harley kit. Hopefully someone will chime in

Found my answer. The Harley kit includes the new style Cometic type gasket and the o-rings are no longer used. Thanks for the responses. Hopefully this thread will help somebody out one day.
