Always wanted to do some track days and between Robs accident & Racing Ralph,I think next season would be a good time to start!Looking at a Alpine two piece leather suit will AMA let you on the track or do you need a one piece?

As long as they zip together, you can do a track day. As far as sanctioned races go, you need a one piece.

basically, in a nutshell

the AMA is a governing body for professional racing in the US. the elite american circuit, it has nothing to do with doing track days in your area

tracks govern their own track days, so you should check with some in your area, and see whats available

now in dfw, there are organizations that also facilitate these, they are

ride smart track school.
more of a learners environment, interaction with instructors, who are always on the track when you are. some classroom time as well. typically for the VERY FIRST track day experience, this is where i would recommend starting since its structed for beginner, interm., and expert and broken into these groups

and there is also lone star track days .
this is one is nothing like a school environment, you pay your $$$ and smash your bike around the track (responsibly). still structured for beg, int, and expert. however, people here tend to already be seasoned for the track day experience and picked up a wealth of knowledge, therefore they don't see the need for something like ridesmart anymore. RIDERS ARE FASTER IN THESE, AND USUALLY WHERE LOCAL CLUB RACERS GET ADDITIONAL PRACTICE TIME.

research groups like htese in your area, gear and everything is explained on their sites, as well as what tracks they're runnign and when

hope this helps

and just my two cents on two piece suits, just another area prone to ripping apart in a get-off, the best suits minimize these areas where ripping apart tends to happen. so whey buy a suit that is literally held together by zippers?

youve never done a track day? but youre racing with the AMA?
My bad I thought AmA controlled it.
I'm looking to go with my son a few times and have some big fun not looking to break any track records.[up]

i c, call the tracks, find these groups/schools and they will have all the info you need

Typically 2pc is ok as long as it zips together at least 3/4 around your body.
Nothing like a over pants zip that just zips across your back.
Gloves should be a gauntlet to overlap sleeves.
Boots are really dependent on what org you ride with but they are worth the money, I've seen a few twisted ankles and its never a good thing.
Some ask for a back protector, some require it.

Some of the bigger track day orgs actually have gear rentals available to make it easier to get in on your 1st day to see if its something you should actually invest in.
But they are kinda like renting bowling shoes, nothing really fits too well.

And if any, right now is the time to look for gear.
Huge discounts on the stuff that didn't get sold this year to make room for next years stuff.

I found a killer deal on a a* suit last yr but I'm a small guy so my size is normally the last to sell out.
Nothing wrong with anything from CorTech, RS Taichi, Tecknic some of the lesser known names.

Agate I'm so in
Nick theres some guys on Wissportbike forum thats all they do is race and track days I get e-mails for discounts at Black Hawk Farm.I want a 2-pc for street so when I stop I can just walk around in pants and a T-shirt,Instead of walking around Target looking like Racer-X :D:D Would hate to spend $900.00 on a suit that cant get me on the track.
right now is the time to look for gear.
That is my X-mas gift to my self! Its great to be me!!!

Take what little experience I have and buy the 1-piece. 2-piece just creates another weak point. Get decent race boots, good gauntlet gloves and use a back protector whether they want you to or not. If you don't buy this stuff the first time, you're wasting time and money, as I did.

If you start to get hooked (you will) and start going to more track days, go ahead and safety wire the bikes whether they want you to or not. You don't want to be "that guy" that sprayed oil or brake fluid all over the track. I didn't do that, but you never know!

I know STG has some package deals for the winter, worth looking into.

And not everyone fits into a 1pc off the rack, so a 2pc with different size jacket and pants is a good option verses a custom made $2k suit.
But you'll still but walking around Target with knee pucks and a tshirt.

My .02¢
^^ All good advice.
If you are unsure you will like doing track days, rent the gear from the company hosting the TD. But trust me, you will be hooked. When you pick out your gear, buy the best you can afford, especially your boots and gloves. If you live where it is really hot I suggest a white suit to stay cooler. I never thought I would get white leathers but I am so glad I did. I opted for a one piece. If you really get into it and end up doing some club racing, you will need a one piece most likely. If you get a 2P, make sure it is full circumference zipper. Some other things to consider- ear-plugs and a sport mouth piece.

check out topgearleathers.com... you can send them your measurements and get a custom fitted suit for $500. I can attest to their quality as I wrecked earlier this season and just walked away with some bruising. The repairs to the leathers were only like $40 too. I was doing about 90MPH in a corner when my tire lost traction...I slid on my ass for about 20-30 feet just for reference.

Agate, the place I work prints the schedules for all the events atBlackhawk farms Raceway. I will post the pdf of it as soon as I get it set up.

i think stt sport bike track time does Black hawk farms.
Go and sign up on there forum they give away track days quite often to people who have never been on a track.
including leather rental and back protector.

keep an eye on the wera classifieds used suits boots and stuff pop up all the time.

I bought a one piece mainly because of zipper burn stories.(basically if you slide on your back it gets dam hot)
But on the flip side if i had a two piece i would likely wear it on the street instead of all my textile gear.

CCS (Chanpionship Cup Series) is another good place to look for used gear, and a good series to watch in person.

Well, this was my first year at the track, and I have the bug(did 9 total track days, at four different tracks). I rode most of the season with a A* 2pc, and it will get the job done, but I stepped up to a Teknic Xcelerator 1pc and will never go back. The 1pc is way less restrictive and my god does this thing keep you cool. I highly recommend this suit, and if you CALL sportbiketrackgear it can be had for $850, retail is $1,3**.

Here is a pic of the Tecknic on the XB.
