I'm really close to selling my buell, 3rd gear is becoming more and more stubborn, im suspecting a shift fork or shift drum. I know the prices for the parts, but i have no idea how much it would actually cost to get the repairs done. I'm not going to do it myself, and shops are reluctant to even give me an estimate, so i don't know if i'm looking at $400, or $4,000 before i take it in. I need somewhere to start. What do you guys think is a balpark price to replace a shift drum or fork?

Year and model will be helpful to know, to start. Also perhaps your location, as service prices vary somewhat by locale.

I understand the older Buells had a 'cassette' transmission which can be serviced without splitting the cases. Newer Buells (not sure of the cutoff year myself, but others will hopefully add their knowledge) require the engine case to be split in order to access the transmission…which takes more time/money.

im assuming hes talking about a XB. If thats the case to work on the actual transmission itself the cases have to be split it doesn't slip out and the entire engine must be dissasembled. I think the early tube frame buells still had a trapdoor transmission.

Its its an xb, its around 20 hours labor, other parts such as counter/main shaft bearings, top end gasket kits, and possibly refresh with some piston rings. Youll be looking to pay someone around $2500-3500 its a pretty serious repair.
