this has happened a few times before and i thought i would ask for some advice.
i was riding and the speedo went to zero like it was in wasnt in gear. If i put the clutch in and rev it up it will start working again, sometimes. This time it went on and off like this for awhile. It seems to happen if im running it at around 4500 rpm for awhile. Part of the ride was in the rain. When i got home left the bike out over night and the battery was dead the next morning. Ive talked to a shop and its had all the recalls done on it.
Any ideas what could be causing these problems. When it is running zero the odometer isnt working either.

possibly a bad speedo sensor? it happened on mine as well. super easy to replace its right behind the rear cylinder, one bolt to take out.

yeah, idk what the problem is. lately when it has happened even a firm gear change wont make it start to work again. i didnt want to have to take it to the shop and have them charge 85 dollars an hour to try and find the problem. sucks because its still under warranty but it wont cover diagnosis.

That's messed up your dealer doesn't cover diagnosis. I'd be searching for a different dealer as the idea behind the warranty is that you don't have to pay to take your bike in. That's the first I've heard of that.

As posted the speed sensor is dirty/failing.

my VSS was replaced under warranty, was reading zero then the speed , back and forth when I was driving.

Re: paying for diagnosis.

Check your local consumer law. Here, they can't charge for diagnostic if you actually get the work done (warranty is paid work, factory is paying) unless you don't know and consent to the charge.

I just replaced my VSS and my bike still reads 0. I dont have the clutch switch hooked up cause of my new clutch master, could that be a problem?

Fixed my problem. Read that the VSS is on the same fuse as the brake/horn. Checked my horn and it didnt work, neither did my brake light. Fuse was blown, replaced the fuse and she reads speed!
