I was on the way to school this morning and my battery light came on and got a check engine with the voltage system message. I turned around and headed home. The voltage dropped to 9 volts with no dimming of lights or running any different then it normally runs. Before I got home I was able to hit a long straight and sit the revs at 5000 and it started to charge back up to 12 volts. Any time I dipped below 4000 rpms it would start to drop again. It never died or gave any symptoms that it was about stall even when the volts were in the 9's. When I got home I could smell an electrical smell in the seat area but nothing under the seat was fried. It was kinda like an overloaded circuit smell. My question is does this sound like a stator or the voltage regulator? I know the voltage regulator is under the seat but I'm not sure if a stator going out would cause the smell under the seat. How can I check for a burned up stator without opening stuff up? ie wires I can hook up to a volt guage etc. So bummed right now I have 2 Buells and both are now down.

Aww man, that sucks! Does the 1125 manual have a stator check in it? I think the XB one does. Not 100% sure if you could adapt the XB test to the 1125 - the numbers might be complete different.

What you are describing sounds like a stator to me though.

Sorry to hear Vance.

Relays are cheap. Try that first. Make sure battery cables are tight. Check other connections. I could be wrong but I think regulator failures result in voltage spikes not dips.

Relay was good. Put a volt meter up to the stator plug and am barely getting any voltage in AC or DC. Like it is not even about 2V's. I have realized the stator is done. Tomorrow I'll try and source someone to rebuild it. Anyone on here ever rewind their own stator. I just spent a bunch of money rebuilding my XB because of a messed up shift fork so I think I'm going to just to the rewind and hopefully will have built of my savings if it happens again for the upgraded rotor. My CR is supposed to be my occasional ride so once my XB is back up it will not be ridden everyday like it has been so hopefully a rewind will last me a while.

Baf on bad web did his, you should contact him. They are not expensive to be rewound.
Did you unplug the harness and plug it directly to the stator(original) if you do that and it charges the stator is good.

Wishful thinking. Might as well ride the XB, save your money and do the rotor/stator repairs both at the same time. Otherwise you'll end up doing two stators... or replacing the rotor and wondering how much damage had been done to the stator while you were saving money.

BTW, a machine shop in your area could almost certainly do that rotor modification for you. It's not complicated, I'm a machinist and have done one myself. There is no need to spend hundreds on the EBR rotor.

Did that no charge. The stator is done. Going to try and pull it this weekend and plan on sending it out next week to be rewound. I haven't looked around at doing the fix on the rotor so I'll start researching that. Just bummed cause the biggest bike festival is next weekend and really wanted to ride the CR to it but it looks like I may be lucky and at least be able to take the XB.

Capital City Bikefest. It is going to be huge this year because Ray Price has partnered with Team Powersports so it isn't going to just be catered for cruisers. It's in downtown Raleigh. It will be all weekend but the main things are happening Sat. They will have a wheelie machine, stunt show, and all kinds of other stuff. Fayetteville St in downtown will be closed except for bikes so the entire street will be bike parking only. I'll hopefully be on my XB out there.
