Passport required for all crossing types, both borders.

Registration required to prove you're not smuggling vehicles, both borders. I've been asked to show it. Newspaper said somebody got busted last month.

Licence and insurance required by both countries same as usual traffic laws.

in michigan you can get whats called an enhanced ID. your drivers license will allow you to cross the mexican and canadian borders by land only. i imagine other states have something similar. for air travel you def need a passport.
