All,

Have a chance to look at a local STT with about 11K on the clock. Anything in particular on these to be watchful for, or simply the standard "stuff"? Thanks!
 
I have an 08 STT with 8400 miles and have not had any issues with it. I've changed exhaust and tires . Get it , you'll love it.
 
the only thing that differs STT from other xb series bikes is front brake line. check that it is not damaged by front wheel from the inside part of the fork. Buell had recall to reroute brake line but maybe previous owner skiped it.
Otherwise STT is a great bike & a big fun to ride.
also check clutch cable mount in front of the engine. better to be changed to Ulysses hardware instead of strange spring decision Buell accepted on STT.
 
I was told by dealer the recall did'nt affect the STT . They did the recall on my SS and the reroute of the cable looks like crap , big cable bracket and tie strap!
 
...do early (what year cutoff?) STT's have the same ULY rear bearing issue? ...early ULY rear bearings were prone to failure (from recollection and reading on other boards/posts).

Also, I think that you could tell if you had the "good/improved" rear bearing if it was a certain color and the bad/old bearing was of a different color. (I am referring to the dust cap color).

actually STT is more Ss than Uly, so this bearing issue is not a point. but of course it is better to check & change bearings (and spacer as soon this metal stick is the main troublemaker) with every tire change if hesitate even a little to avoid bigger troubles.
 
...my understanding is that in a "perfect world" the bearing would perform just fine and last...but a lot of shops (HD or otherwise) get sloppy and use an impact gun to tighten (as opposed to hand tighten)and they overtorque or unevenly torque (side to side)the bolts and that is what causes bearing failure.

your safest bet (as always) is to perform work yourself, use quality tools and use a torque wrench and tighten to factory specified settings.
 
I have an SS and recently bought the STT front fork guards as well as the front mudguard.
Thought it would be easy to swap the Mudgaurd.
Nope.
From what i can see, the SS has a bolt in the middle of the bottom triple tree that holds a bracket for the headlights (underneath).
I can only assume that this bracket does not exist on a STT as the mudguard itself may work as a bracket for the lights (underneath).
Any chance someone here can concur?
Apologies is this comes across as threadhogging. Just thought while the STT'ers are here and all.

Wolf, you're correct. When I swapped my STT fork and mud guards out for a lightning fairing, I had the same issue. No hole in the lower triple to bolt the headlight bracket. What I ended up doing was just bending the bracket and using the hole on the front of the triple instead. Works like a champ and I've got my regular fender now :)
 
How does it mainly differ from the SS?
(i've been told that the OEM tyres on my 2010 SS are the as the STT. What the..?

- front high fender vs stock one
- front fork mudguards vs stock fender
- pirelli scorpion sync tyres vs pirelli diabolo.
- suspension travel (inches)
- 5.63 front vs 4.72 front
- 5.63 rear vs 4.97 rear
- rake/fork angle (degrees)
- 23.1 rake vs 23.5
- 21.6 fork angle vs 22.0
- handlebars guards vs nothing
- handlebar with upper reinforcement
- headlight guard

ps: never even thought of the fork angle and rake. Wonder if that will cause an issue with the high mudguard i got. Oh well, i'll let you guys know.
 
I just bought that 2007 STT that Vospertw was talking about in this thread. Having it shipped to me from San Diego to NorCal.

It's my first Buell and I can't wait to ride it.

I'm 6'5" 235, so a long frame XB was a must. I test drove a cityX which was super fun but it was just too short from my ass to the pegs and I looked like a monkey romancing a football.

What would you look at/do to it to safety check the bike if you just bought it? I want to nut and bolt the whole thing to suss out any loose guys or shit that's falling off, and change my fluids. I'll check brakes and any other consumables as well.

Any other suggestions?

check throttle position sensor... not sure how, but do know that is something that needs to be checked every 10k after the initial 1500 mile service.
 
RRRRoger that. TPS is on the list. I'm also looking for a tech manual(service manual?) for the STT.

Something that's all the way in depth. I don't need the Haynes manual-like picture of a finger pointing at a dark "thing" with no refference. You know.

I'm used to Air Force life where everything has a Technical Order (TO).

I'm still reading FAQs and old posts though. Lots of learning yet....
 
I bought my 07 TT new in may 2010, now problems so far 1,400 miles, when i took it in for 1,000 break in dealer replaced clutch cable bracket as per recall. the new bracket is heavy duty as the original one was just a flimsy wire one that in some instances allowed the cable to rub up against the header pipe and melt. Make sure this recall is done, could save you a headache later down the road.
 
I'll be taking care of that cable bracket myself if it's not sorted out when I get the bike. Thank you for the reminder.

I'd rather punch myself in the dick than to drop it off at our local HD for any sort of work though. I'm not just spouting some blind prejudice for them, my venom comes from experience. They really do look at you like a second citizen if you ride a Buell. This is such a simple vehicle that there's no reason to outsource any work at all unless I don't have a very specific tool. In that case I'll go to a reputable motorcycle shop that doesn't dress in pirate clothes.

I'm glad to hear that your STT has been trouble free for the time you've had it. Is your bike stock or modified? Do you ride it in the weather? Have you replaced anything to aid in comfort/operation?
Any information you can pass on will be received gratefully.
