I'm in Tujunnga (Burbank, CA area) and I've been chasing this electrical problem for a month. Several posts here with some usefull help but no solutions. Started with the bike dying and me noticing the fuel pump not running. Replaced that with no effect. Then noticed the check engine light didn't cycle with the ignition turned on. Found the ground wire from the fuel pump to the ECM and the BAS green wire were both rubbed through to the copper by the shock reservoir. Must be the problem right? With all the electrical tape removed from that section of the harness everything else looked fine. Tested with ohm meter nothing shorting to ground or power; did wiggle test and wrapped it all up. still nothing.
Got a used ECM, no chuck engine light. Fucked with it some more, unwrapped the electrical tape again; no 5V to sensors, same as first ECM. borrowed a fancy Fluke multimeter in case mine was a cheap Chinese piece of shit, (it is but it also works fine), checked ohm reading on all relevant wires. Got some electrical lessons from the electrical engineers at work. Got laughed at and teased. Checked everything again, memorized the wiring diagram from looking at it so much.

After another 5 days Got a second used ECM, again off a running Buell. Figuring my bike is now eating ECM's due to some short, I rechecked everything again and still found no shorts etc. Wiring turns out to have better resistance than my original test wire! (so I chucked that). Asked more questions at work, got teased some more. Plugged in the 3rd ECM gritted my teeth and turned the Key. Eureka! Chuck engine light cycles, gives me codes now for the first time. I'm thinking I'm the man! Take that you fucked up ECM, bad wire, weekend wrecking piece of shit.:D ......Oh oh. I don't hear the fuel pump; crickets... Seriously!

So I buy a wire to hook up ECM Spy, wait 5 more fucking days for it to arrive, then spend 2 hours with my kid on the computer and we can't get the driver to load for the port on the computer. So ok, that would only have allowed me to clear the BAS code I was getting (44), but the fucker should work with that unplugged. So that's it!! I give up.

Anybody have experience with Glendale Harley Davidson? That is my next move unless someone in the area can help. [mad][mad][mad][mad][mad][mad][mad]

contact theycallmecrash, he's in north county San Diego, he may travel to you ...maybe he can take a look before you go to the dealer. he's also on the forum fb page...

Based on the description it should work.
I do a lot of Buell Repair work, Id be happy to take it on, my only issue at the moment is prepping a few bikes for Laguna seca and Ill be gone for 5 days for the races in just over a week. If the problem is still present or cant get harley to figure it out quickly, once Im back I can arrange a trip

If I hadn't waited so long already I'd jump at the chance Crash. (Races are in 2 weeks, I'm still thinking about going). I'm hoping the dealer can figure it out. Logic says it's the ECM but I just can't believe 2 in a row don't work especially if there is nothing in the wiring killing these black boxes. But then I think I've already proven I don't know the answer! :( I'll keep you in mind for this and other future issues.

I just have this feeling they're going to sell me another ECM, charge to program, charge to diagnose, charge to pick up, charge me for breaking it, charge me for liking to go fast around corners, charge me for not having a Harley. etc.

the "ruined" ecms.......did you plug them into another bike to see if they worked after you tried them on your bike?

No, wish I could do that. And I don't know if the current one has anything wrong with it or not. Unlike the first 2, it does everything it is supposed to do except provide ground to the fuel pump.

Did you happen to see the comment I posted in your other thread on this issue?

>>section 4.11 of the service manual has a complete diagnostic flowchart for "engine cranks but won't start".

It is three pages and covers a lot of areas, including fuel pressure (incl. when pump does and does not run), injectors, cam position sensor, etc. You can either pay someone else to do it, or attempt it yourself with assistance from the forum. As you have noticed, there are a few knowledgeable folks around willing to help, but keep in mind that we don't have the bike in front of us. You are the eyes, ears and hands, so unless you are willing to try a particular test, it doesn't happen.

Yes, I've been through most of that post. I will take another fresh look when I get home. Also I feel that I understand how the circuits work and like Crash said, it should work from my description of things. I must be hung up on something and I'm missing the fault. It really does not make sense that it doesn't work.

Even if it doesn't solve the problem, you will have a page full of things it is not!

Let me ask you this, key and switch on, it theire an initial fuel pump priming, and then doesnt prime again after cranking?

Take the tube loose at intake, see if it's actually pumping fuel up to the intake.

If it runs on starting fluid then it's injectors or fuel pump. No other options

Dammit! I was hoping to use my 1190th post on a 1190

I'm thinking you might just want to replace the whole wiring harness... But first

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Genuine...ell|Submodel:XB9S&hash=item5b13d2b674&vxp=mtr

You should be able to do a simple system check now since you have ecm spy check everything.... It should only take you about 20 mins to pin point your problem...
do a tps reset. Then check the system.
Run the fan, fuel pump, front and rear injectors and coil....

Key and switch on, no fuel pump prime. ECM does not provide ground for fuel pump so it does not cycle when key is turned on.

If you guys know of a common problem with the driver associated with the ECM Spy wire that would help. That is where we were getting hung up. Kept getting a message "are you sure the key is on and the run switch is on"? My son seemed to think this was an indication his system was not "seeing the cable or port".

Wiring harness is tempting. Does this require engine rotation?

Just read reviews for Glendale Harley and there are lots of bad ones. One Bueller left his bike there for months and finally pulled it when they didn't work on it. Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

There are at least three conditions where you will see that message:
1. Data Link Cable issue:
a. loose/poorly crimped wire inside cable's plug
b. pin sockets have recessed back into the plug
c. cable not fully inserted into bike's data link socket

2. Wrong COM port chosen (assuming you have multiple COM ports)
3. Bad ECM and/or data link socket wiring issues

Yea, I hate to take away options. But I went there when California Harley messed up my stator install. Got towed to Glendale. Spoke with shop manager and was ready to leave the bike to have fixed. But he answered a call while talking to me and kept chatting with a buddy about mods he had done to his Harley. After 20 minutes of this, I said f$&k it. Got my bike and had it towed home. This is when I started working on my own bike. He looked at me like I was crazy, and I told him I would not give them any of my bizniz...

But the parts guys are pretty cool and go out of their way to find you what you need.

Bartels use to have Mitsu, their Buell mechanic. But they didn't renew his work Visa and he went back to Japan. From what I was told from most every Buell HD Shop in SoCal, that he was the top mechanic in the HD area. The only other option might be Simi Valley or Irvine. I don't recommend California Harley.

Good Luck.

Since I was able to jump the pins in the data socket and pull codes manually the ECM is probably not the issue for hooking up. Cable was definitely all the way in. So I think we have an issue with the driver / port or something along those lines.

Can you post or screenshot the exact error message(s), and also what version of ECMSpy you are using?

Yea, but I'm at work. Not sure I can get ahold of my kid to do it for me. I'll try.

Kid says the error message was that the "ftdssi Drivers failed to load". He was not at home and that is what he remembers if that is any help at all.

When I opened the ECMSpy program an error came up: "failed to load [email protected]. Are the FTDI drivers installed?

The other message we were getting was "Timed out waiting for ECM response." "are both ignition and kill switch set to on?"

Harley of Glendale can pick it up late Friday, so I have a few more days to try.
