I am seriously considering a 2009 XB12R. I have a 2006 currently. Its giving me fits and I'm getting real mad at the previous owner, but that's another story.

My question is about the difference in performance charistics between a ddfi2 and ddfi3 bike. I'm pretty well aware of the physical/mechanical differences in the engine and bike in general.
Ride charistics?
Throttle response?
I have a pretty good idea of the tuning ability. I use TunerPro RT and MLV currently on the '06.
How different is the tuning process with ddfi3?

Well I rode the '09 in some twisty canyon roads. I'm going to have to disagree with the statement s of sameness. I think they are two very different creatures!

'09 has xopti tune but feels weak, it also has a lot of decel popping :( I'd like to get in touch with Mike but I haven't had any luck with that yet. It has a race pipe, k&n, and breather reroute and is quiet and very smooth running engine. So smooth in fact that it confuses my sence of power perception.

'06 has a race ecm, a d&d pipe, fully modded airbox,breather reroute and k&n.
This bike feels raw and badass! No decel popping what so ever! Throttle response is Scarry at times.

The '06 earns the title of Beast! The '09... not so much. I think there is a great deal of tuning left on the table for the '09. Maybe if I put the d&d on the '09 it would have the thump I'm used to.

So heres my fulcrum. The '09 is way too good of a deal to pass up and I probably shouldn't keep two bikes...

Oh, and by the way, does anyone know a good way to contact xopti (Mike Cobb)? I've left messages on fb and his gofundme site with no response yet. I would like to ask a couple of questions before I click the PayPal button.

I had major decel popping before I went with a EBE race ecm. You should be able to program that away easily. The crank is beefier and the oiling is better on the 08 up.

I believe the 04-07 motors are more "fun".

There is noticeable torque curve difference between the 2 types of motors

09/10 look the best to me because of the black motor. So I swapped several.

You could paint the older motor pretty easily tho

Yeah, the all black engine, frame, forks and triples really does it for me too. And yes, The funness of the earlier build is a very long list of adjectives!!

I equate their torque curves and vibration to the cummins engine in Dodge pick-ups.
both early engines are louder, torquey (is that a word?) and vibrate more than the newer ones.

I have two of the earlier 12 valve trucks and am building a third drivetrain to put in a regular cab short bed 1500. 3x the power and 1/2 the weight!! That, is funness!!

I'm talking with Mike Cobb now about refining the tuning on the '09. He said it would be easy to tune them to equality. Hmm, Hey Mike, can I tune some vibration into the '09! ;)
