So I have been putting together a 07 buell firebolt xb9r for a while now. So I wanted to see if the bike would start even though I don't have the tail lights wired. I put the battery (battery is new and fully charged) in it and the bike lights up, but when i go to start it, it clicks and the lights turn off and nothing happens. Would this have to do with the wiring not being hooked up? Any input would be appreciated because it won't be til the weekend before I get a chance to work on it again maybe.

Forgot to mention check engine light is on and the oil light underneath is on as well. But the oil and oil filter were just replaced. And I have not checked any codes or anything, this was the first time trying to start the bike after the accident.

Sounds like a bad battery. You should do a load test on it. Otherwise, your battery cables aren't getting a good connection.

Clicking is good. Lol. Check ur fuses too. Ur taillight does have a ground, so chevk that also. Same thing happened with mine (07 firebolt xb9r). Make sure battery is at least 13volts needed to crank the bike over

So this is what the battery says, it's brand new and fully charged.
Battery Type: YTX14-BS
Voltage: 12
Capacity: 14AH
Dimensions: 6" x 3.34" x 5.75"
Weight: 8 lbs.
C.C.A.: 200

The thing is I haven't hooked up any of the taillights, they were cut when the subframe was busted off.

Make sure the grounding cable is tight on both ends. I had a similar problem a few years ago that cause my bike to run like crap and flash the check engine light. I parked it and a few weeks later I tried to start it and it did the exact same thing, it clicked and then it completely killed all power. I thought the battery was going bad so I took out and load tested it. It showed good. I put it back in a few days later and my problem was fixed. I have no clue to be honest.

So I wired and grounded everything, and still nothing but this time where the oil cooler lines are at, it started to smoke and it was freaking hot to the touch lol. Won't grab that again. But still the bike won't start.

That's no good. Just look for the short. It should be easy considering its probably burned. I don't know where the starter is off the top of my head, but it may be the culprit. The clicking could be the solenoid engaging, but the starter may be hooked up wrong or have a short internally.

ok, if it has a short does it have to be replaced? But why did the oil cooler lines get hot if the bike was not running? And I appreciate all the help

Yakima, Washington. Yea im stumped and I had just dumped $300 to get my clutch installed at my local hd dealer. If I have to replace the starter that means the primary cover must come off again. :(

Wow, I'm in Texas, that doesn't help any. I'm not too familiar with how everything is set up on our bikes since I haven't had to work on mine yet, but I'm all too familiar with 12-24v automotive systems... I'll try to look at it later today and see if I can find anything. If not, I'll get to it this weekend. Sadly my Buell and I don't live together during the week. We're over an hour drive apart. :(

Those wouldn't happen to have been the starter wires that were smoking were they?

Is the engine locked - kind of like hydro-locked? See if you can rotate the engine by hand or in 4th or 5th gear. Reason is this: If the engine is completely locked, then the starter won't move. A "locked" motor will have a HUGE amount of current running through it and yes it can smoke the wires - I've seen that first hand.

So how do I rotate the engine, do I just turn the back wheel in 4th or 5th gear or do I do something else? sorry im a newbie at working on bikes. I can take everything off and put back on, but I don't know specifics if that makes any sense.

So the check engine light is now off because apparently I had a fuel commander on it, which is on another post of mine. I connected that but still not starting, but check engine light is off now.

Any chance you can bump start it? At least you'll know then if it even runs. I wouldn't suggest letting it run too long though seeing as you have electrical gremlins.

nope tried push starting it down a hill so i could get some speed to make sure I could start it, and nothing happened bike still clicked and reset itself (clock on dash reset). Im so confused[confused]
