Hello, I have an 03 xb9r and im trying to tune the bike. I changed the oil and filter, checked the timing, put in new park plugs (properly gapped), and ran the trouble codes, a TPS reset and such on ecm spy. after I warm the bike up and taking it for a spin I come back with the idle very uneven, I hooked it up to the computer and was watching the little box that tells the loop info and it kept switching from a closed loop to an open loop, to a closed loop to an open loop, ect. also when I ride and I roll on the throttle, the rpms will drop down then up then down then up like a roller coaster :D for a little then be fine.

Not sure if this has any relation, but when I changed the oil in both the tail and the primary, there was A LOT of metal on the magnets.

I have checked the manual and around the forum, not sure if my incompetence has gotten the best of me, again...or I just don't have a clue what im doing wrong or whats wrong with my bike. help would be appreciated

Sorry for all the beginner questions, I am still pretty new to motorcycle mechanics, and I don't have enough money to go out and get it tuned :/ I love my Buell, but I know she can preform better.

Could be intake seals going bad. They can have weird effects like throttle response without the sensors detecting anything. Took me forever to figure out whey my bike was acting weird the first time I needed to change them.

Well lets start with what you have done first. Oil change shouldn't effect the idle at all unless you went with a gear oil instead of a 20W-50 Motor oi (this is a Harley motor so metal is normal on the plugs). When you checked your timing elaborate how you conducted this and why? New spark plugs are the wires settled correctly or did you have unusual trouble getting them on(possible messed up the connector on the inside)? Why did you run the trouble codes?

This sounds more like the culprit: When you did a tps reset did you back the screw out and do a true TPS reset (click the button on the other tab) then let the bike warm up before adjusting it to proper idle? What was your final value for proper idle?

If you want to check what wolf is suggesting i would start here: http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-For...Scg/having-a-hard-time-finding-intake-gaskets

Also, this really isnt a tuning question for your head more of a running rough question for your title.

lso when I ride and I roll on the throttle, the rpms will drop down then up then down then up like a roller coaster
decrease spark advance at low tps and rpm right above idle rpm

When I did the timing, I followed the directions on the forum and manual to the "T". I did this because I was hoping to work with the fuel maps, but before I did so, the ecm spy guide said to check all of these first (including running diagnostics and trouble codes). Through the spark plug replacement process everything went well and no issues occurred. I switched from a normal coil plug to the NGK Iridiums (I heard and felt a huge difference in power, very nice). When I did the reset, I unscrewed the screw two turns past after the TPS % wouldn't go down past 0. Then pressed the reset button (after I pressed the reset button, I found that I has to repress the online/offline button. Not sure if that is normal or not). I did let the bike warm up to 140 Celsius before tuning and screwed the throttle control screw until the idle was between 1050 and 1150 and my % was at 6.7 (when I started the bike the % was at 5.4). When you screw the screw out, do you screw it out until it cant be screwed out anymore?
As for what wolf is talking about, I will do some more research on.

What were some symptoms of the bad seals wolf?

decrease spark advance at low tps and rpm right above idle rpm
ich- is that having to do with the maps??

simple: did you ride the bike prior to tearing into it to perform your work and if so, how did it run in a general sense? did the idle problem you describe exist at that time? if not then the problem exists in somewhere in the work/maintenance you performed minus the oil change which would have no adverse affect on anything.

look at a recent post of mine for correct tps reset and see if you followed all steps precisely in the listed order.

luna- yes prior to the work I have put on the bike, I did ride it, regularly. I still do, it runs ok, but I know it can run soo much better is why I started working on it. It still ran with a rough idle and a bad power response. The upgrade on the plugs did a good difference, but the rough idle is still there.
