Hi folks,

I'm planing to buy a Buell XB, not sure yet which model. Up to date I'm riding a Yamaha SR500 and MT-03, but also want a bike with more power and awesome sound now.

Going to take a look on a used XB9s (Lightning? see here) in a couple of days, I was wondering if there's any good advice the pros around here could give me, if there is for example something specific on Buells I need to look closer at or ask the seller in more detail. Any sort of advice would be most welcome.

Paul

Check to make sure the rocker box gaskets are not leaking. Usually its the rear cylinder on left side have to look up behind the frame. Look and see if belt has wear or rotting. Check fluid. Then make sure theres no huge fluctuation or light dimming with small revs to motor. Hope this helps.

paul: are you in germany? i ask as the ad is in German and at 5990 euro, that bike is over-priced. you might best be served by buying one here in the USA where reasonably priced nice condition XB's are readily available. Firebolts and Lightnings fairly plentiful, Ulysses' somewhat less so in quantity. importing a buell into Germany is fairly easy. if you're considering it contact Thomas Schwabenland in Liebenburg. his website is OldTimerHandel. tell him John Lutz from Mid-Atlantic cycle sent you. he is very familiar with importing bikes and parts and would probably walk you thru it as he's very helpful and knowledgeable. hope that helps.

Thanks for all the advice, something like the buyers guide is what I was hoping for!

@lunaticfringe
Yes, germany. Never thought about importing a bike before, but now I take it as reasonable option. I'll contact the guy :)

Lunatic is correct, prices over here in New Zealand for XB Buells is pretty steep also. It was alot cheaper for me to source one from the USA. But whatever way things go for you, im sure you will enjoy the Buell. I am a new owner and im kicking myself for not buying one earlier!! Good luck mate :D

I have both a "R" and a "S". model XB.. the "S" is more fun and turns a lot quicker.. feels like BMX bike with a lot of torque. The "R" has wind protection and feels more stable at over 100mph..

for a 1st XB, I would take the "S"..

Agreed with Gloomshadow.

The XB9SX is the best motorcycle ever made in my opinion. Perfect all-around good times machine. Until you have to sit in heavy traffic in the heat of the summer that is. She gets a bit warm.

You can flick it anywhere, anytime. It is the backroad master. One of my favorite aspects of it was the ability to sling it from the white line to the yellow with minimal input. Didn't even have to be holding on to the bars, just use your hips! It's that stable! (at stock height)

I have also had many religious experiences shifting to 2nd from first. It just feels right. You don't get that with the 1125, that thing you are just trying not to anger it the whole time. She's got an ego problem, don't think she's recovered from being pulled from the AMA yet, ha.

yeah Squead, that's what I got. XB9SX Hero blue, its the perfect bike for a "James Bond" chase scene. Blasting down back alleys, knocking over trash cans and catching air off of urban debris... makes you want to go off the road and ride on the grass to get around cars... makes you wanna do "bad things"..
