I can pull the front up no problem clutching it in 2nd. I cannot for the life of me get it to come up in 3rd. It whines out and the wheel probably comes up about 8" - 1 foot. I tried shifting my weight back slightly. I was told that the front wheel should float off the ground into the balance point in 2nd without any clutch, and no problem in 3rd using the clutch. Any advise?

Well one thing you can try is pushing down on the handlebars/hitting the front brake slightly first to preload the suspension and then when the front starts to spring back up is when you clutch in/rev up/and clutch out. Let me know if that helps at all.

Also, tighten up your suspension, particularly in the rear.

Thanks man. Any particular speed I should be going and taking the RPM's too before dumping the clutch?

Right now in second I'm rolling about 40mph and then dumping the clutch around 5500rpm and it stands up perfectly.

Well the powerband should be the same regardless of the gear you're in, so just shoot for that or a little less and see what works.

i have a mental block of the bike just shooting backwards and landing on me lol power wheelie is all i can get myself to do for now

hey climber try driving down a straight road in first and then when you get around 4K RPM just hammer it and shift...

you guys are insane! ya only got 2 wheels! pick one o' 'em up and you are voluntarily taking away half your contact with the ground. I've been riding for 25+ years... even used to do some amateur racing.. never was comfortable with a wheel in the air.

I have really small chicken strips.. and have littler fear testing a bike's lean limits... but when it comes to wheelies, I just say no.. :)

I have never clutched it, but I can grab a wheelie in 1st NO problem, but I'm also pretty heavy, so I have never gotten one in any other gear without clutching it...

I looped mine in second, I had done tons up to that point. To much gas and away I went.

Haven't done a wheelie since.

Alright, went to work at 5:30 this morning. Roll-on in first no problem with a lot of preloading and I way 195. Second gear could not roll-on at all, would not even come off the ground. Clutched second and stillstood up no problem. I tried shifting my weight all the way back and clutching it in third at about 55mph and took the RPM's to about 6500 and I felt one of two things, either I had major clutch slipping or the rear tire broke wayyyy loose. Still don't understand the highspeed wheelies. I was sitting down the whole time.

Probably dew on your tire if you keep it outside and your tire broke loose, mine does it every morning... First 1-3 times I try to hit wheelie all I get is back tire spinning. It's cool though, all that spinning just dries the tire off for me. All the way up to 6500rpm is a nogo as the powerband drops off before that, should be around 4-5k where you get the nice pull.

forget clutchin' it up... just do a 2nd gear stand up and bounce it.... works great .. much more controllable then clutchin' it up.. just my opinion

I can do 3rd gear stand up's no problem but i sure wish i could do them in 4th tho cuz i dnt have the balls to shift while doin a wheelie.....

Ok, then I'm not sure if the back tire is spinning anymore now. Perhaps it is the clutch, or the operator of the clutch, any reason you can think of besides that? Keep in mind that no matter what gear you're in you want to aim for the optimum TORQUE range, when it comes to wheelies, HORSEPOWER isn't really what you're looking for. (I'm sure someone will chime in to "prove me wrong") Go through the gears each time and see where you get the best pull.

He is right. Torque is what gives the pull. HP is in general a fabricated unit of work over time that gives little real information on the dynamics of the bike.
