About 2 wks ago I took my 08 12r in for services, new tires, and detailing. Also specified I wanted new fluids and filters all around.(ordered tires about a month prior through the dealership, stock Pirelli Diablos)

So anyways, pick my bike up, and everything seems good after a quick look over. Off I go to the house, and park the bike since I'm still waiting on my registration.

Registration comes in, and I take the bike to the MSF course on post. During the inspection the first day the instructor points out that my tires are a bit old...then points out the dates on them. Front is 2906, rear is 1907.

Now I know enough about tires to know that outgassing and storage will effect them overtime and make the rubber harden, thus leads to less pliability, less traction.

Considering the age, would you consider them safe for daily commute(40ish miles/day)? So would you consider this acceptable? Specifically from a dealership? I know it's something I should have checked before leaving the shop, but do I have any sort of recourse available due to it being 2wks after the service already?

Either way I'm never using this place again due to other issues with their service dept, but I'm more concerned with any safety issues at this point.

what kind of tires are they? dunlop? They should be fine, since you havent rode yet they havent had a chance to break in. Once you start riding take it easy in the turns until your tires have a chance to warm up. Once you start seeing "chicken strips" on the sidewells thats when you know they are warmed up and starting to obtain maximum traction.

As far as age of the tire, most tires will have a wear line that runs all the way around in the center of the tire to warn you that your tread life is low. If you do not see that line then your fine for at least another couple thousand miles.

Id say your fine, just take it easy at first, see how it handles traction wise, and make sure your air pressure is right around 34 psi front and 36 psi rear.

First off, ordering tires from a dealer is costing you HUNDREDS of extra dollars. Second, stock diablo's are good tires but get terrible mileage. Try jakewilson or rockymountainatv for the best online deals for tires. Fleabay is even awesome source for tires.

I would say your tire age is prolly fine.

if it were me.....i would be ok with them as long as they were not dry cracked or showed signs of bulging or "dents" from being under things for long periods of time. and the date codes (in case you dont know) are first two numbers are the week of the year and the last two are the year. so the front looks like it was made in july (ish) 2006 and rear may (ish) of 2007

I put 5k on an old kawasaki i had that had original 1982 tires on it. new tire are GREAT piece of mind but in my opinion you should be fine...but thats all it is, is MY opinion. do what you feel comfortable with. and stay safe!

They're Pirelli Diablo Ts, with 0 miles on them when mounted on the bike.

I'm more concerned with the actual age of the tire, since both were already 5yrs old when they put them on. Meaning for the last 5yrs those tires have been sitting in storage somewhere.

Thanks, just so use to get everything from the dealership back home I guess I'm just stuck in my ways a lil bit. But will def shop around for the next pair of tires. God knows the bike is getting expensive enough with all the things I want to do to it.

You should be fine as long as the tires were indoors the whole time and not on some sun drenched rack out back of the shop.

over 4 years old and the rubber starts to degrade dosnt matter if its inside, outside, hot or cold.not to mention if they were stacked wrong

I've worked at a tire shop for 5 years now... Technically they have to be pulled off the shelf(non-sellable) after 6 yrs... Not safe on a vehicle after 10..

But, I agree. I wouldnt want a tire after it was Four years old either.

TooFst, Thanks for schooling me. I learned something I didn't know about tires.[up][up]

7 years is manufactures cut off date by law. I got 8500 miles out of my first set of stock Diablos, tire pressure is key. I ran at 38 psi the whole time 2 psi over stock.

I was just wondering the same question....i bought the bike with 350 miles on it in 2012 and the guy didnt really ride it i put 4k on it this past summer and i think i have one season left on them but in the back of my mind i think they are way to old..... they are stock tires that came on the bike i believe they are Diablos not sure if theres more to it then just diablos but the manufacture date is 5007 so these are from 2007 so that means at least 6 years old......becasue this bike sat alot should i change this out? and sorry for the thread jack just didnt want to make another thread on the same topic.
