my bike wont start. the start button sometimes does nothing when I hit it. up until today the starter sounded like it was dragging. and now I hit the button and the stater spins but does not engage and start the bike . any ideas

It is on the relay box. Left side of the controls on the bolt. I know on the 05 it is the top left one.

But from experience a bad relay causes a fuse to blow

Welcome to the Forum. A possible
Weak Battery!Maybe.?This check will work on Any XB Buell!Lets' try to hopefully keep this Cheap and Simple for you. If so, there are some [relays] up at the front of the left side slightly under the fairing area.Just gently press or pull outward Gently the tabs on each end of the cover where it snaps down to protect from weather.
You will see it/it's a small square black cover over the 4 grey relays on the Left side. Take Note/ NOT to unplug all of them at one time.Look at the side it should be labeled on the cover and make sure to put in back on the same way. It just snaps on.
Usually it is [not] the Relay. It is always a good area to check.BUT NOT the First thing to Check out for a problem. The Start/Kill botton on the Bike sometimes will be stubborn and can not make Contact but I doubt it.
Make sure to remove the Seat first before you do [anything].A 27 Torx will do it. Check The Battery Terminals. Have you done any Mods OR added lots of lights and so on? Rather IS the Bikes Electrical System had any add ons?If the Bike Is STock Electricly,
Then the [Battery] is the Best place to start! Remove the (Battery) and have it (Load Tested) at the Auto parts Store.Especially if it's the orignal Battery.Make sure to save the two small [brass] cable spacers and the [Bolts] that keep the Battery cables at the proper angle. Otherwise they will come loose all the time. It is a 200-CCA OR- Cold Cranking Amps/ Battery.NEVER jump Start the [Bike] with an Truck or Car Battery (UNLESS) the Auto or truck is [not] RUNNING at all.
The Automotive Batterys are much more powerfull.
Especially if the Vehicle is running and that can really mess up your Bike.!
Never use a Diesel Truck Especially with the Twin Battery System or you will fry the ECM.(Brain of your bike).
It is much cheaper for a Tow than for an ECM. Plus what ever it damages extra!
Removing the Battery will only reset the Fuel mileage Not the Odometer, wright down the mileage if you need to. AND the Odometer as well so in case you need to for filling up purposes.I use the Harley Batterys in mine due to it works better. It does seem many I have had to go Rescue out on the road cause they Were cheap and thought just any battery would hold up.
I end up putting a Proper Battery and add on the Pigtail for a Battery Tender for keeping the Battery up properly.
Just make sure to test your Battery [First] before you spend some Money.IF you have the 08+ Buell no matter what Model,it is good practice to Reset the TPS with the Key Turn method, after reinstalling the BATTERY fully charged. AFter you have Checked your Battery [IF] it checks good you will need to move to a [Volts] check but the Battery has to be done New or old after Reinstalled and checked first.Never Charge the battery on a Charger with the BOOSTER Charge and Try to start the Bike.
This should get you started in the right Direction. There are Manuals at the Top of the Page that will pertain to many areas of the Bike.
Not the (ECM Area if your bike is an 08+ Buell) but there are many people on the forum that can help you so post us with what you find, and good Luck.*Jimi
