I'm not sure where to connect the RPM signal wire on my shift light. I tried the front and rear pin of the plug that connects to the coil, neither worked. The next thing I plan to try is tapping into the pink wire coming out of the ECM. Says in the manual that goes to the tach. Will this work? Thanks in advance everyone.

so I connected it to the pink wire out of the ECM... no dice. I connected it to me car where the one in my car is connected and took some voltage measurements. I have the light set up for a 4 cylinder right now, and the light comes on when 18+ volts are present at the rpm signal wire. the pink wire out of the ECM is only putting out ~6V. In my car, as the RPMs increase, so does the voltage at the terminal. on the buell, as the RPMs increase, the pink wire maintains ~6V. no change really... I'm puzzled how the tach even works now, since there is no voltage change (or extremely minimal) when RPMs change. I'm also pretty stumped. what do I try next?

the pink wire work on mine... i have a proform... set up for a 4 cylinder... at least i think its the pink wire... lemme run out to the shop and take a look... shoot me a msg here or a PM and ill get ya going...

what light are you running?

a lil more info might help...

ok just came in from out on the shop...

mine is tapped into the pink wire... Pin #14 on the black ECM plug...

there is a black wire on one side of it and a yellow on the other side of it...

let me know if you want me to take mine apart for you

yeah that's the wire i was trying to use... hmph. my light is meant for a 4/6/8 cyl engine, i have it set up for a 4 cyl. i guess on good question is: will the RPM set on the light be 1/2 or 2x the actual RPM. ex. 3k on the light for 6k on the bike? or 12k on the light for 6k on the bike?

the light is cheap, here's the link: Adj. Shift Light

I planned on mounting the unit below the fairing on my 12R, and running some wires so the light could be remote, wherever I wanted it. it's too bulky to mount the whole thing in a good spot.

i hope this helps solve my problem. the lowest RPM setting is 3k, and I haven't taken the bike to 6k yet with the light connected (in my garage) so if the light is 1/2 actual RPM, that may be my problem.

thanks again

well theres how i mounted mine...

the on f the back of the light is where i have mine set... all the way down to 3000 RPM...

and the one with my finger on the tach of where mine is lighting up... i have mine set a lil low due to the big bore kit and gives me a lil time to shift...

hope these help

awesome dude. thanks! I was told it would come on at 1/2 the RPM i set it to, so I never revved it over 4k. I don't like to beat my bike, and free revving a constant 5-6k just doesn't appeal to me lol. i'm gonna hook it up again, mount it somewhere temporary, and see if it comes on around 5-7k. I hope so! if so, I'll mount it permanently.

thanks again, I'll update everyone in the next few days how I made out.

off topic but i have a raptor performance shift light that i havent used since i sold my formula years ago... if someone would want it.

How much? Will it work on the Buells?

I know harley davidson is on their pull down for motorcycle applications. but the site is buggy and not loading.

I could do 45 shipped.

here's a pdf for the install it had a 2 cylinder selection they measure pulse per revolution. click

Installed!! Thanks sidefx!!

Pink wire is tach, orange & white is ignition & black is ground...Found all the wires under the shield so no need to fish wires back to the ECM on the Lightnings. Works perfect!![up]

good to see it get some use outside of my closet lol. that spot seems pretty good and concealed.

Well...Took it for a ride today and took it all the way to the rev limiter and got no light. I had it set at 6900 RPM so it should have worked[confused] The limiter is at 7k right? Maybe the some inaccuracy between the light and the tach never let the light come on? Maybe I'll set it at 6500 and see if that works? During hooking it up I tested it between 2-3k and it lit up fine...

id say there prolly is a little in accuarcy... prolly plig or minus 100 to 200 maybe ever 300 rpms....

but i cant say for sure so dont take my work for it...

if it were me id set it at like 6K and then slowly bump it up to where you want it... i always set mine a little early so i have time to make my shift b4 i hit the limiter and start loosin alot of power... but thats only on the strip...

In case anyone cares how I made out, well, here's how I made out:

Soldered wires to three LED replacement bulbs (each has 4 LEDs), then mounted them side-by-side just above the tachometer. Un-soldered the original reminals for the lightbulb inside the shift-light, and soldered the wires for the new LEDs. Leaving off the section of the shift light with the lens etc, I tucked it under the fairing, practically out-of-sight, but still adjustable. Set up for 4 cyl at ~3100RPM, comes on amber and super-bright at 6200RPM, perfect! Here are a couple pics of the finished product:
