i was looking for a bike just to save gas, back in 06. went buy the pawn shop and there she was, 2000 x1 bone stock. my dream bike, a buddy in college bought a new one in 01. i walked in and they said 4500 cash. so the next morning i went to the bank told em what i was doing and walk in the pawn shop with a blank cashiers check and wrote it out for 3500, then slaped down a couple benjimens and she was mine.
I've been lusting for an 98 Lightning since... well 1998. Couldn't afford / justify with kids in school, mortgage, etc. 6 months ago, was looking at Craigslist one day and there was a Bolt, not 20 miles from my house, and I'd just gotten a small bonus at work. Went to take a look and loved every second since then. Except for when she locked up her trans and thru me to the meat grater. Had a ball fixing it though! They are simply to work on, parts are not really that hard to find, and the folks on this forum are the absolute best!

When I was gearing towards riding a bike to save gas, spend time on, and just generally fill that craving for living on two wheels, I was looking into Sportster 1200's, but as much as I wanted one, I found the sport bike look to be so appealing. I told myself that I would never own a jap crotch rocket only because they are loud and annoying (I grew up around trucks and muscle cars; my first vehicle was a '73 Bronco that I rebuilt through high school). I wanted there to be a bike that had the best of both worlds and then I found Buell. I immediately wanted one. I looked around for the next 4 months for the right one and I ended up going to see a bike that became mine the same day... [smirk]
Well because it is what it is. You can read every post over and over when this question is asked and we all say the same thing in a round about way. I like the attention mine grabs when she is on a crowd. Just recently I attended a bike night in Dallas,TX at which there were over 200 bikes easy. If you looked around though there were only 10 types of bike that spanned many years. When I pulled in everyone...... I mean EVERYONE stopped and looked. Baby girl was the only of her kind in a sea of sheep. It felt good to be different. Some drooled, some hated, a few wanted to buy. In a city as big as DFW there are only a hand full of known Buell's that are really ridden the way they were designed and they draw attention when we sit still long enough to be looked at.
fire sale ad .i always wanted an American sports bike. I didn't even think they made one. so I went and looked... hmmmm very short wheelbase...I don't know I'm kind of tall.Then I saw the 2010 xb12x. wrap it up I'm sold. Took some time to get used to it... not like any jap bike that's for sure. it a love hate thing. i will never sell this bike.

Same reason I like loud, obnoxious, fire belching American muscle cars, hot rods, and Top Fuel. Sure, there are more efficient, high tech speed machines, but most lack soul, character, and most importantly, torque! American ingenuity, gotta love it[up]

kelper: if you take the "buell plunge" and your new love doesn't have hot-rod muffler, install one and prepare yourself for the following comments:

It IS as close to a 2-wheeled muscle car as you can get! I remember when I bought my '06 XB9SX....rode to the Harley dealer with my buddy to get a set of colder plugs for his big-bore softail...while I was waiting on him, I went to look at the Buell's...I'd always wanted one, but wasn't in a position, financially, to buy one. I asked the salesman if I could hear one running. He said: "we can do better than that! Would you like to ride one?!". I didn't HAVE to ride it after he fired it up, to KNOW I wanted it! It sounded SO cool!! I only had my permit and my '83 Honda Interceptor at that time, so without a "licence" I couldn't take it on the street...but I rode the ownwers daughter's demo around that big parking lot for a half-hour! I was smiling from ear to ear! He said; "what do you think?"...I said; "I wish I could afford one". So we went in, and to my surprise, I was approved for 100% financing, with a quite affordable payment! They didn't have a 'Kick-Ash' colored one ready to go...But told me to come in Monday nite after work, and they'd have one ready! Man!!..That was a LONG weekend to wait!! I sure wish I could do that again!! 
Are you talking about a specific brand of muffler, or just anything aftermarket? Google doesn't bring back anything about a hot rod brand name. Also, I've looked around for an anwswer to this question and haven't found much: How do you pronounce Buell? The only thing I found online was a guy saying it sounds like "boo-ell". I figured it was prounounced "byule" [confused]

kelper: buell as in yule as in cool. by hot-rod muffler i meant take off your stocker and send to randy hawkins in GA for his reasonably priced mod. there's tons of aftermarket mufflers and systems for XB's but with his as well as drummer...a few others...the chin fairing bolts right back up. his sound awesome and jack up the HP as well. lotta bang for your buck. just youtube search-"buell hawk exhasut" and you'll see what i mean. now buy the bike, damn it!

Never gave owning a Buell a 2nd. thought until this last January. I have been buying and selling bikes at the Mid- America auction in Vegas for years. This year Bonhams added an auction the same weekend. I went over to check out what they had and saw this race bike with no reserve. It raced 2009 season in the AMA Daytona Sport Bike Division by Bryan Bemisderfer. I thought there is no way I can afford this but what a cool bike, I'll watch and see. The auctioneer called 3rd and last call for $4400.00 and I raised my hand, SOLD! What did I just do? I got it home, checked the fluids, added fuel and it fired. Damn it's loud! I have since added lights, tag and original #98 and ride it on the street. My neighbors love me! Don't wait for years to buy one like me. Good luck. Rick, Frederickburg, Texas.
