32F outside, and I decide to go motorcycling. Cold road, cold tires and going left out of my drive, ass end looses it, and I'm down. skinned my knee to, but my pride is hurt mostly.

15 years of motorcycling, and I still learn stuff the hard way. (sheesh!)

A replacement shifter is needed, and the mechanism going into the gearbox is bent up a little. Is this common for this type of damage and can it be fixed? This is my main concern. No leaking fluids, but the metal rod worries me a little. The washer b/w the casing and the shifter is also done. The linkage appears to be ok.

Anyone done this before? If so what is the price?

Been there just caved onthe primary too. The rod going into the case might be ok but it is hard to say other than seeing it. If it functions properly I wouldn't worry about it but you will need to replace the seal and other items.

Personally I would replace the linkage if it has any damage since it is a key component to driving and to have one of those link snap shifting while on the road would be a bitch.

Oh and for price figure new will run around $75 for a new shifter assembly and a little paint for the lever. You can find cheaper but if your in a hurry it will cost roughly that much maybe a little less.

You're lucky. When this happened to me, In addition to what you have damaged, my primary needed replacing, clutch cable, tail plastic, and also my handlebar. Your shifter assembly is going to cost the most being how you need the linkage, the bolt and the lever. I was luck enough to get it at buellsterparts for $20!! Check them out. They have used parts at decent prices.

I may have some parts you can use. I have one side of the linkage and the bolt just laying around.

Oh yeah, i didn't mention there's just 550 kms on it. 2010 R. I'm still pretty pissed off. Might take you up on that linkage and bolt dave.

Price?

Yeah, Dave.jhnsn at yahoo.com . But let me make sure I can find them before you send it. I'll get back to you in an hour or so.

So aside from my knee, and the brake lever, this is the extent of the damage. Linkage is fine, and pretty much everything else. I need the shifter, bolt, plastic shifter bushings, and the first allen bolt to the shift linkage, and nothing else.

Pretty lucky actually....

Looks like you got it easy, shouldn't cost to much and if you search you should get it all done for really cheap.

Oh and just so you know bikes dont handle the best on freezing roads :D

I can't tell you how embarrassed I was. It was surreal. My wife was watching and kids were asking what happened to the bike and were actually crying. Well, I almost cried too.

$hit happens. At least it's a cheap fix.

These aren't anything pretty, but it will get you rolling faster and hopefully cheaper.

I just noticed that you dont need the linkage. I'll send you the bolt if you want it. No charge. shipping the bolt is chump change.

1001yos: is your rubber/plastic boot messed up? I have a shift lever that the boot was torn on? It was the original on my bike when i got it. I just bought a new one. let me know. its yours for $20 shipped if ya want it.

32F, where do ya live? sounds like the weather here in NY. Glad your ok though. The pride will heal, and the bike can be fixed.

I did the same thing this morning.

24 degrees outside and didn't make it 150 yds out of the driveway and lowsided it.

I knew the traction would be an issue but I didn't realize it would be that bad.

My front tire let loose, 20-25mph.

No biggie I guess, I do enjoy working on it.

Broke off my front brake lever and got a little scuff on the swingarm.

WTF was I thinking? ITS 24 ******* DEGREES OUTSIDE!!!!!

1001yos...I'm glad your okay :)...keisersozae ..wow you guys are hard core in those temps

I only rode this morning to be an ass.

24 is the coldest I have ever seen it here in San Antonio (been here about 6yrs) so I felt I should do something...lol.

Should have been a wus and drove my truck, my baby would still be all shiny and warm in my garage.

if you have a bent rod end at all on your linkage i would change it. when i bought mine it had a bent rod end but it didnt bother me until the one day it snapped. there was a stress crack that had formed when it bent. i could tell when i looked at the break, part of the metal was rusted and a very small piece was fresh metal. luckily it happened as i was leaving my house.
