I have a 03 xb9r that i just took out today after putting it back together from haveing the frame painted over the winter, I started it and it ran for about a minute backfired and died, then I noticed fuel was leaking from the vent valve hose the one by the gas cap, it would not start after this it tried once and shot a flame out the exhaust. Any ideas thanks

Check to make sure none of your vent lines, including the one for your fuel tank/frame, aren't pinched off anywhere.
There's a transmission vent tube at the top of the bottom end behind the rear cylinder and infront of the starter(I think that's right). Anyway, you can trace it back( from where it terminates) to the source from inside the undertray, just infront of the battery, to the top of the transmission/bottom end area.
Also check that the crank case breathers or breather reroute if you have one, are free and clear.
Report back with any new info.
BTW how long did the bike sit while you were having the frame painted?
And do you have ECMspy

I will check all the lines this weekend and see if that's the problem. The bike sat all winter about 5 months and yes I do have a ECMspy. Their is a chance that I connected the fuel injector wires wrong could this be the problem, when it was running for that minute the fuel pump made the sound it makes when its priming.

Could be your fuel pump is on it way out.
BUT rule out the injector wires before investigating the pump any further.
Also, did you treat your gas before letting the bike sit all winter?
Might want to try fresh plugs, fresh gas and some sort of fuel injector system cleaner.

The frame was sprayed it was not bead blasted and all openings where covered. Its seems like the fuel pump is pumping fuel back into the frame for some reason.

Good at least that is eliminated as a problem! it is a process of elimination sometimes, so yep maybe concentrate on the fuel pump for a while, check all wires and connections are clean and try the old faithful "gentle wiggle" test! others on here will be able to help out with their knowledge too so stick with it you will sort it in the end! See when mine backfired a lot it was plugs and leads but i didnt have your fuel issue, i wish you luck!

And when I tried to purge the fuel pump to release the fuel pressure by disconnecting the pump wire I got nothing when I turned the key no lights or dash functions nothing all.

Where and what wire exactly did you disconnect?
You should be able to disconnect the fuel pump(connection is located at the lower left section of the frame just above the fuel pump area) and still have power to everything else on the bike.

I disconnected the fuel pump wire the one coming from the pump and I have power to nothing when I disconnecte it.

That's definitely not right.
You have a short somewhere.
Also, if your pump sounds like it's priming, for more than 10-15 seconds, it's probably on its way out.
Check all your wiring. All the obvious places first; battery, battery cable grounds, positive lead from battery to starter, wiring at front head stock and everything under the airbox cover.
Something is serious wrong. You shouldn't lose power when you disconnect the fuel pump.

after looking at this thread you clearly have "reassembly" malfunctions as follows:
1-the frame/fuel tank vent valve affixed to the top right hand corner of the frame holds the vent line. the vent line runs over top of the inner airbox lid...down the lower left corner of the lid thru the dedicated lid stay....then down behind the left side of the frame and thru the captive frame loop and points towards the ground. anything else is incorrect.
2-the fuel pump absolutely cannot pump fuel back into the frame unless its internal connection hose is severed. when working properly AND connected properly it can only pump pressurized fuel into the throttle body assembly via the injectors.
3-the fuel pump wire harness and ground wire has absolutely nothing to do with your gauge cluster or lights. all those systems operate normally whether pump harness connected or not.
4-refer to service manual to verify your work. in all likelihood your injectors harness wires are installed backwards.
5-were you inside the fusebox doing anything? check that the 3 relays are properly installed and that the blade ends aren't corroded. check schematic on underside of fusebox lid. see fuse listed as DIODE? check yours. schematic has arrow on same....diode fuse has arrow on same. it MUST be pointed correctly which is to the right side of the bike.

I tried starting it today after it sat for a day and it fired up but when I turn on the high beams it shuts off and won't start.

To fill in everyone I put HID lights in last summer and as soon as I tried the high beams the bike wanted to shut off, and after a few seconds it would be fine but now it shuts right off. So I will check the lights first or it could be the stator or the battery.
