I have an 08 XB12R. I'm thinking about putting heated grips on. Has anyone here done this to an R? Is there a stock option for this? If you went aftermarket how well did you like them and what brand?

Thanks

I've got heated grips on my 08 XB12R. Hands down the best mod I've ever made to any bike I've had. I don't know what brand they are but they were originally meant for an ATV. Around $80 Canadian. I had to buy a switch and some epoxy to put the grips on, call it $95 all said and done. I ran the power from the hot wire going to the motor for the exhaust valve with an inline fuse. It's only got power with the key on.Three years and love them. Good luck.

I bought one this year and haven't installed it yet (xb has been down due to an accident with an idiot cager turning right from left lane this summer).

Don't remember what I paid, but Manchester shows it at $191 right now.

I got a cheapo trackside set from cycle gear. Got them on sale 3 or 4 years ago. Very easy to install. Just look up some you tube vids.
Only gripe with the ones I have is that the wire going to the resistor for the low setting broke from vibration. That happened after a year or so of use.
BTW I thought 2008 and up Buells were already wired for heated grips? Don't you already have a switch for heated grips on the brake side of your clip ons?

wired for heat, yes. If you want to upgrade with the kit, it's supposed to be easy to do on 08+ but it wasn't standard equipment. err, not on the 08/09 xb and cr i had/have anyway :D

I think the wire harness is pre-wired for the heated grips but my start/stop switch housing just has a blank cover where the heated grip button would be. I tried to upload a pic. but it was to big

that's correct - wired under dash for plug and play, but you change out the switch housing with the one in the kit. it has the switch for the heating elements. Can be seen in the link posted above (pic 2 by boreas)

08+ are wired for heated grips, they will bolt right on any XB or 1125 model, you may have to drill a small hole for the factory grip set screw. I don't recommend glue but to each his own

I've got them on several X, a 12r & SCG & a 9sx & 1125r

another suggestion is bike-master heated grips in 7/8th size. smith family powersports sells them on both ebay and amazon for $47 delivered. the price is great...the grips are great... they have a very nice feel and finish to them and thickness is excellent as well. .have installed them on 9 XB's to date and they work great. come with harness, controller, everything you need to install. if you choose not to go with trying to cobble up the factory harness then simply install controller anywhere you like, one wire to any ground point and positive feed to orange headlight wire. the grips only draw 25 watts.

how good do heated grips work, as compared to heated gloves? Can you ride in the 20's F ? I'm not used to the cold weather and rode in 28 deg weather to work the other day and even with freeze out liners and thick gloves my finger tips froze. I'm looking for a solution.

how good do heated grips work, as compared to heated gloves?

sean: IMO heated gloves suck due to the expansive wiring, bulk of the glove itself and the plug-in hassle. others might love them but i found them way too much work. heated grips work on the same principle as a heated vest or jacket liner. ever notice that when your hands get really cold the chill seems to travel up your arms and make them cold as well? the warmth from heated grips works on same principle. you want a grip that warms fairly quickly....5 minutes or so.....and has at least 2 heat range adjustments. i won't ride in the winter without them. regarding the installation i've found that adding factory grips to a pre-wired 2008-2010 Uly was incredible pain in the ass. the bike-master grips are the way to go. a very relaxing and enjoyable evening project on any XB. nice thing about the installation on any XB is the amount of free space behind the headlight area on all models.

Heated grips are extremely convienient. They're there when you need and they're there when you don't. Temps here in NC can change quite radically from day to night. Having heated grips I haven't had to worry about packing the heated gloves, just in case. I've just had to flip a switch if my hands got chilly.
And like lunatic said. When your hands are freezing there's nothing else you can think about and it seems like your whole body gets colder and your whole ride turns miserable. I've used my cheapo heated grips in temps down to the upper teens. Yes the hands got a little chilly with the wind chill but had I not had the heated grips I would have never been riding in the first place.
I recommend a good set of leather insulated gloves to help retain the heat from the grips. Makes a world of a difference!
And like some others have mentioned, I too wired my grips into the hot wire for the headlights. That way they can only come on when the key is on. I've accidentally left my grips on high, several times, and luckily did not kill my battery because I wired them through a component that required the key to be on in order to draw battery juice.

Thanks guys, I chimed on on someone else's thread, but I'm going to try those grips out...
