Hey Gents,

OK so I live in LAs Vegas Nv, While its a party town and you can party and ride almost all yr round there is one thing that suxs.. The HEAT! its horrible on bikes.. I recently posted on the Forums in regards to my Fan not kicking in after a long ride.. My twig an Berrys are on fire after these rides and I know it is not healthy for the bike to be so hot.. SO I need your help!!

I need to source some information as to where or how the fan works.. IE: sensors? more less looking for a diagram as to where it strats and how it works all the way to the fan it self..

Back story:
After a ride I noticed my buddies bike fan running and mine was not ( He runs a Blacked out 04 XB12R Nasty) so I poped the seat and checked the fuse.. it WAS blown.. I replaced it and looked at the fan.. It was caked in oild and dirt and shit..
Degreased and washed went for a ride and wooohooo it worked!! for a min :(

After a all day ride it refused to turn on.. fuse check to be good but no fan running.. Sensor right???

So i don't have ECM spy Yet but am gonna order it.. So what i did was unplug the fan from the connector and hardwired it and it turned on and ran for 5 min or so without any issues..

Now what?? i need your help.. is it a sensor? or is the Comp/ECM dead ? any diagrams or tips tricks out there?

Thanks,

Tiger

IAT sensor more than likely

build yourself a jumper and jump pins #1 & 2 in the dongle next to your battery, read the flashes of the CEL...if you get code 15 and 36 (IAT sensor & cooling Fan) bet on the IAT sensor being the issue setting the cooling fan code also, that's if there isn't anything wrong with fan itself...IAT sends the signal to ECM to kick the fan into action

before changing it though, check connections at the sensor, ECM and fan, do the wiggle test of the harness which is looking for an intermittent signal due to chaffed, poor connection and or broken wire

thrstrmech - I do not mean to disagree with what you are telling the OP here at all.

Just want to clarify for myself :
I have 2007 Buell Lightning official factory manual in front of me - and it says the following -
With key on - cooling fan should run when engine temperature hits 220 C (428 F) and turn off when 180 C (356F)
key off - cooling fan should be on when engine temperature is 170C (338F) and stop when 150C (302F)

I can't believe the IAT (Intake Air temperature sensor ever sees those kind of temperatures? Wouldn't that melt the plastic airbox? I believe that the Engine Temperature sensor could possibly see temps in those ranges? (since it is located in the rear cylinder head).

Are you saying IAT due to experience? Could the manual be incorrect in this case - or simply misleading?

Thanks,
Rusty

I'm pretty sure he most likely meant the Engine Temp sensor in the rear cylinder head ...

I kind of have that problem too. My fan never kicks on while I am riding it but it does when I stop and turn if off. Is that a problem? I live in Missouri and It gets Hot, so I would think it would kick on every once and a while riding.
