As many of you know the sidestands are prone to breaking and there is an upgrade kit available for $70-$80. I just ordered the pin(L0174.4A8) for $11 and modified the sidestand. Take a 1/2" drill bit and drill all the way thru. I also had to grind a little off the backside of the stand so i could fit a clip on the pin, the stand was about 1/64-1/32" too thick. I forgot to ask about the E-clip from HD, but a standard 7/16" E-clip from any hardware store will work. See below for pics.

drilling out the stand, could be done by hand but if you have access to a mill or drill press use it.

view 2 of upgraded stand, you may think the metal is too thin but the new stand is the same way. HD did not change the casting as far as i could tell they just drill out the whole piece like i did.

i measured the pin in case anyone wants to make one

What else comes in the whole kit to make the price go up so high? I feel like the pin would be the biggest part, unless the new setup includes the whole new sidestand arm with the bigger hole in it.

the new kit comes with the pin, eclip, and sidestand with the bigger hole already in it. didnt really seem worth it to me.

the pin is the same for all models too. the sidestands are model specific but if you mod your own you already have the right length.

Good write up. This mb in my future. Great alternate to some of the other high dollar stands.

Army you don't have to do this you have a 09 with the new pin already, mine did also but I have a kickstand from a low so I had to do this and luckily I had the pin from my 09 kickstand.

i just ordered the pin through Gateway H-d in St.Louis and they had it discounted for a total of under $9. Just so anyone else looking to buy knows

Yeah, friggin H/D just went up on parts. The newer bikes have a better kick stand BUT make sure to keep an extra pin and clip cause they do wear out quickly. Cheap crap from Korea and so on. Nice DIY Kona, and a C,clip may last longer with the up and down motion. My E clip popped off so after the new C- clip seems ok . Good picts .*Jimi

I believe 07 is when they changed it I could be wrong its as simple as walking out and looking at your kickstand. If there is a e clip on the backside you don't need it, if the pin is screwed into the back hole of the kickstand I would recommend it.
