Hey Buellers, I have to write a research paper for my college class on a controversial issue and thought this would be a great topic (Motorcycle helmet laws). If anyone would like to put their thoughts out there, I would love to hear them. also if you have any websites or news websites with stories or anything about motorcycle helmet laws, I would gladly use them in my paper. Thanks everyone!

Yeah heres a thought.... just wear it.[up] Not to fond of seeing someones head explode like a watermelon.[down] Seen to many die over stupid mistakes and not wearing a helmet.

I find not wearing a helmet the dumbest thing ever, why not take every precaution to keeping safe on a bike. I live in Michigan and they just approved the no helmet law last friday. Really hoping my insurance premium doesn't rise because other people don't want to wear their helmets.

here in illinois you dont have to wear a helmet just eye protection. I personally think it is the dumbest law ever i think everyone should be required to wear a helmet.

My thought on the helmet laws has always been this. I think wearing a helmet is a great idea, and I will ALWAYS wear one. However, I don't like laws requiring one to do so.

Good Luck on your paper!

For those that don't wish to wear one I wish them no harm. I however will wear one, and I don't want to see your brain splattered all over the pavement, it's a sight I hope most will never see. It's one I've never forgotten and I don't think will ever leave me. You affect more people than you know when you die like that.

Thanks! Yeah i was reading up on the new michigan law and I will always wear my helmet. Since my argumemt will be: helmets should be required for safety reasons. Theres always the other side of why riders feel they do not need to wear the helmet. Why do you think some feel they do not need their helmets?

I don't think it should be a law. I believe in Darwinism. The government starts by telling you to wear a helmet, then they will want you to wear a high vis yellow jumpsuit, followed by walking around in a giant plastic bubble.

I see no benefit in having the law..sure it will save lives, but we can't babysit the world's population who don't want to be saved. It can be argued that it reduces insurance and health premiums, but I find that most people who object to helmet laws often wear novelty helmets which offer about zero protection anyways.

With all that said, I live in a no helmet state, but I always wear mine.. even if it is a quick ride down the street where I wont exceed 25mph.

Strangely enough, I am for seatbelt laws...that law actually makes sense to me...but thats a different topic.

I say don't require it by law, but allow insurance to not cover head injuries if you aren't wearing one. You choose to be stupid, you deal with the consequences.

I have always worn a helmet although I did try not wearing one in Arizona when I took a trip out there a few years ago,it bothered me so much that I never did it again,I am all for helmet use even if not required by law.

I'm in the camp that wearing a helmet should be a choice, as should wearing a seatbelt in a car.

Do they help in accidents, statistically.........absolutely. Can't convince me otherwise.

But I think it should be a choice, not a law.

I myself have only ridden my Buell once without a helmet and that was going 15 miles an hour down my street after replacing rear tire, sprockets, and chain to test ride. Would never take it out without a helmet.

darwin's theory of natural selection is how i look at it.

Also anyone not wearing one will get no respect from me. Respect yourself and what your parents gave you before you want others respect.

But to each their own.

I am for seatbelt laws because someone who isn't wearing a seatbelt can become a human torpedo and can injure/kill occupants in the other car. The body can also be ejected from the vehicle and causing a separate accident.
Then there are parents who need to be punished for not making their children buckle up. I draw the Darwinian line when it comes to children being endangered by their parents ignorance.

DING DING DING!!! I'm with Loki on this quote.

I will say it infuriates me when I see a benefit group or event to raise money for some persons family who passed in a 2 wheel accident when they never wore a helmet. They played and they paid, End of story. Like Loki says they didn't respect their own life.

Yes I'll say a prayer for them but I ain't giving money or sympathy.

Not that i want to bash him but a forum member Rrh481 past after a accident without a helmet at a very young age. Its a sad story but might help you in your paper.

I was going to post the exact same thing!

Gov't shouldn't be involved in many things including whether or not it is illegal to not wear a helmet. It is stupid not to wear a helmet, and if you don't want to then fine, don't and deal with the repercussions if you end up having any. The only issue I have with people choosing to not wear a helmet is when you have to scrape their brains off the asphalt with a shovel. I don't think anybody wants to have to go through that.
