Thinking about having my plastics sprayed by line-x with their bedliner. I don't want to go the DIY spray can route because I know I'll screw it up and I've realized I can't afford to repaint. I really like the look of some of the line-x jobs I've seen out there and I guess I'm just being lazy by asking about pricing. Anybody else done this?

The closest Line-x shop is about 45 min to an hour away and my schedule just doesn't allow me to get these in the next few weeks. They can't give me a price without seeing the parts in person but the guy said a steep estimate would be $6/sq ft. and that they would have to fully encase each piece or it will peel off. I'm fine with a price like that but I just have a feeling I'd show up and there would be something more they'd charge me for.

If anybody has experience with Line-x, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks
 
i had a frien line x his roof of his jeep. This stuff is very heavy. Make sure they go light.
 
Linex is great, but I bet it'll be expensive to do your plastics. The problem is the amount of "wasted" overspray when spraying such small and not flat/solid items. I had a quote of like $600 to do the frame on my old suzuki gsf bandit.
 
Yea plastidip is co, but for plastics of Gina different route.

I did my rims in plastidip and they are holding up fine, but a friend did his Gsxr in it and its rubbing off all his plastics and tank now...
 
I did my plastics with spray on Line X. $7.00 can from Home Depot. Came out great!

Not sure how or where you ride, but I feel bed liner is overkill on a street bike. Off road I like it because it's durable & easily repairable. But on the street it weighs a lot compared to paint and I think the XB already has enough visual 'texture' that shiny plastics contrast well with.

LineX isnt for street bikes imo.
 
Nibniblee, yours came out looking great. I'd appreciate any tips you have on getting that nice even looking coat.

I guess my last post didn't show up for some reason. I'm not looking at line-x for its durability. I'm just looking for a cheap alternative to paint. Ive got a bad rattle can white paint job from the PO and the price to replace or professionally paint plastics is just too much.
 
I bet you'll find line x on your plastics will be much more expensive than you anticipate.

You can do a very good DIY rattle can paint job in your garage for no more than $200 on the high end. And this includes buying a mask, plastic, tape, etc.

I rattle canned my brother's bike years ago and it still looks great:

Only thing as a draw back is it's not extremely durable(will scratch fairly easy and will not be resistant to fuel splashes)
 
Has anybody tried rattle can clear over the paint? Seems like it would maybe help with the scratching issue, but IDK. I've rattle matte cleared some raw mild steel that I put a patina on, it seems to be holding up ok.

If your looking for the cheap route, just strip the paint off and re-polish your plastics............

The pictures I posted above are primer, base, and clear. All rattle can. It looks great, honestly as good as a real paint job, not real hard and durable though. It's fine if you are a careful person. But if you lean on it, etc it will scratch pretty easy. Not nearly as durable as most new vehicle paint jobs which you can pretty much lightly drag a key across without scratching.
 
I know that there's a post on here somewhere about something called plasti dip you could google it, and it even peels off clean when you want to change it. They even say the only prep work is wiping down with alcohol. Worth a look.
 
I've seen one bike totally cover in blue I think ryno liner it wasn't as nice as line-x but that's what I had on my first truck in the bed. I but the ram emblem behind the cab which was really cool, i though it looked good. But to add a emblem or for say a stripe down the middle perhaps would be cool but expensive. And I would worry about the mounting holes so everything still fits when it's done.
 
Was alot easier than i expected -

I tested on my hand guards first (inside). Learned to move way back with the can and get a fine mist.

1. Buy bed liner spray can - I got the $6.99 can from Home Depot. 1 Can did 2 coats on tank plastics, and 2 coats on front high beak. Used the whole can.
2. Taped with painters blue tape around decals - i went 2 layers as it did seep thru a lil with my test spray - looked like lil black pin dots.
3. Spread out some newspaper in the yard - sprayed for a second or so on the newspaper first to make sure no goopy liquid came out. Stand back about 2 feet and spray er on. Keep the spray can moving and do not touch the wet bed liner.
4. Waited about 90 minutes (dry to the touch) and came back with a light 2nd coat, from about 2 1/2 feet away. keep the spray can moving, you want a mist to fall on.
5. Waited 90 minutes and put it all back on
