I just picked up a 1999 Buell X1 Lightning and it is missing the ignition and the key. The guy had it hard wired to start it up for me. The harness end on the bike is still there. I see that the original Buell part is $75-$100 used and will simply be plug and play. I am trying to save money on this build though. Will something like this work instead?

This works for Harley's of the same year so I am thinking I can splice this into the harness or just wire them up together. Any thoughts? Any other alternatives? Thanks.

Sure thing. The guy I bought the bike from lost the key so he rigged the wires together to start. He has the key to the gas tank though. Not sure why he removed the whole key cylinder but whatever. The title is in his name, clean New York title. He owned the bike since 2008 and had it registered and on the road last year.

It has polished wheels, a Vance and Hines exhaust and a Forcewinder intake. We got the bike started but it stalls out after a while. I am going to clean it thoroughly, make sure all the fluids are fresh, put on the new ignition and a new battery, and see what the deal is. If it's a fuel delivery problem I will have to seek help from Harley or Buell guys since I usually deal with carbed bikes. I currently own a 1985 Kawasaki GPZ 550 and a 1979 Suzuki GS 425 which I converted to a cafe racer. Thanks again.

I picked it up for $1,200. I figured the exhaust and wheels are worth that alone. I have already taken it apart, removed the tank and the whole rear tail section. I am not keeping it stock though. I plan on modifying it a bit. I won't chop it or anything, that way I can always restore it to original. It needed a really good cleaning, oily gunk everywhere. Hopefully I can sort it out soon.

Yes you can make that H/D switch work.. If I remember you have to add a jumper, seems you need 4 wires maybe, been a few years back so memory may be foggy.

So this on made me crap my pants. Am I missing my fuel pump???!!!!???? I can't find it. It's not in the tank is it? I found these 3/8" rubber hoses clamped together but no pump.....WTF???

Ok I think I may have just freaked out over nothing. That looks like there may have been an inline fuel filter there at one point. So I guess the pump and regulator are in the tank? How do I remove them if I want to replace???

Yep, I am an idiot. I finally located a free dowloadable pdf for the X1 manual. Now I can safely remove the pump. Crisis averted. :upset:

correct... pump is in the tank, and there should be the fuel filter between those 2 lines.

a popular and worth wire upgrade is to remove the stock rocker box covers and replace them with XB ones. Lets the crankcase breather better.

Thanks for the info. The bike is naked currently. I also removed the entire rear tail section to fab something out. Going to put more of a cafe seat and cowl on there. Nothing will be chopped, damaged or otherwise cut so it can be completely returned to stock.

I ordered a HighFlow fuel pump with regulator today. It replaces the bulk of the parts on the original pump assembly and only costs $69.00 shipped. So new ignition, new battery, new fuel pump and regulator, new plugs, new fluids.....hopefully this thing will start and keep running.

Thats how i did my tail section subframe. All bolt on to the factory location points.

Pur pony- what seat are you using on your bike?
AND I'm all about chopping and truly customizing a bike. Especially when it's done with minimal budget and tools.
Kind of what the true essence of a cafe racer is suppose to be. Unlike the over priced catalog cafes that are popping up everywhere.
Sivilized- I'm curious to see what you come up with.

im using the stock seat that i had reworked by Cory at HT Moto in CA. Had the pass seat area squared up, had the very front of the seat built up and a gel pad installed, and a custom seat cover. Love the way it came out. Im actually talking to him now about doing another seat for me.

You have a link or contact?
I'm in the middle of hacking my XB subframe and the finished product will definitely require the stock seat to be reworked.
