2013 Mustang GT500 - NASTY!

Mustang and Camaro are always compared because they are considered pony cars/muscle cars not a sports car like the vette. Plus the timing of production. Vettes came out in 53, stangs in 64 1/2, Camaro/Firebird in 67.

I should have cut and pasted this first. Much more concise expatiation than mine : )

Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety of high performance automobiles.[1] The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines muscle cars as "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."[2] Usually, a large V8 engine is fitted in a 2-door, rear wheel drive, family-style mid-size or full-size car designed for four or more passengers. Sold at an affordable price, muscle cars are intended for mainly street use and occasional drag racing.[3][4][5][6] They are distinct from two-seat sports cars and expensive 2+2 GTs intended for high-speed touring and road racing. Developed simultaneously in their own markets, muscle cars also emerged from manufacturers in Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.

Anrkism95 Ive heard you say that any company that took cash for clunker $ participated in bailout before . but wouldn't the purchaser of the car be the one participating in the bailout? I'm not sure how it worked either way I think it's ******** and if a company can't thrive on there own they shouldn't exist . I'm a small construction company owner and since the real estate rebate we haven't had one house to build. So when the government steps in to help one industry they hurt another . Call it me being bitter but I feal that ford had the least impact or involvement in the recent bailout ********, and think they deserve respect for sticking it out and changing there line. Instead of stomping there feet holing there breath untill mommy gave in and rewarded them to save union jobs. Sorry if I dragged politics into the conversation just my thoughts.

i would say both participated but the dealer was the only one making money

its all personal preference to me, i live near chicago so I couldnt buy one because could you imagine getting that thing to take off in the snow? and what the salt would do to it?

I like them all and that thing is badass but im still buying a charger mopar. that and the buell are what gets me going, not the fastest in their classes, but they give me everything I need without hesitation.

This is why I wouldn't buy one. I believe it uses leaf suspension in the rear. Really?

Hardly. The Mustang hasn't used leaves since the 70's. The Mustang does use an "antique" solid rear axle but it has probably the best multi link coil spring setup ever developed for a solid axle car. Do a little homework and you might be surprised. The Mustang has no problems killing an M3 around a track and will run, literally, within a whisker of an M5. Those are some seriously good handling cars to be running with.
I doubt there are more than a couple of people on this forum that could "outdrive" a current Mustang.

Also consider that drag racers prefer solid axles by like 1,000,000:1 They are simple, generally stronger and infinitely easier to setup than an IRS. Mustangs and drag racing have gone together like peanut butter and jelly since the late 60's and it's a BIG market for the Mustang and Ford.

that makes sense i never really thought the camaro or mustang were sports cars they both handle like ****.

Go drive a new muscle car, they handle with the best of them. These days the difference between a muscle car and a sports car is the look, marketing and torque curve. Muscle cars are built for low end power where a true sports car will see more high rpm. Go to motortrend.com and look at the comparison between the M3 and mustang, the lines between sports and muscle are blurry for sure.

Solid rears put down more power. And the new ones can run with an independent all day with no issues in the twistys.

you should drive a real sports car.lotus elise, porsche boxter, mazda rx8,lancer evo.this list could go on and on before the stang, camaro, charger and viper were on it.and with the 2011 gt500 having a 12 sec quater mile time shows ford dosnt know how to put 550 hp to the ground wich wont get much better with an extra 100 hp.

I sold cars for a lot of years and have driven every car you just listed, most of them suck except for handling, not one of them has decent power. sounds like you need to go drive a new mustang before you comment on its performance.

i have well an 11.porsche boxter 12.7 quater gt 500 12.4 quater lancer 12.6 with way less power than the gt500

Comparison

Sorry then my info was wrong on the leaf suspension. So it doesn't make a good sports car. Doesn't make a good luxury sports car. Not a sports saloon. Not all that good on the drag strip (you can run those times in a civic for much cheaper and with much much less power) Only reason to buy this really is if you like the looks, sound, and nostalgia of owning a mustang. IMHO

That's comparing apples to oranges realy a mustang is a muscle car not a tunner . Sure you can get better performance from independent rear suspension but it would then loose the nestalgic feel of a muscle car. Compare it to a camaro if your a fan of independent . Not a four cylinder rice rocket thats like comparing a gxsr to a Buell. When it comes to Detroit muscle cars 3 cars stand out STANG,camaro and challenger! This new STANG may be the baddest of the bunch now but I doubt chevy or dodge will sit around with there hands in there pockets and shrung it off there probably building a 675 hp beast. Maybe then ford will switch to independent who knows. Competition is what keep these cars improving I can't wait to see what's next!

Buying any of the aforementioned cars is simply personal preference. They all have their pros & cons, gives & takes. Unless you have infinite money, getting one car than does everything perfectly is next to impossible. So, point is, get a car that fits your lifestyle and personal applications best and make the most out of it. Isnt that what we try to do with our Buells? And for what its worth, I love my Mustang GT.

if the stang can be compared to the camaro with it i/s then it can be compared to vette and all euro and asian inports.the camaro is bigger and weighs more and has i/s if comparing the stang and camaro is fair then comparing it with any vechicle with over 300 hp is fair.it just dosnt perform overall it slightly faster in the 1/4 than import 6 cylinders and slower than the bigger camaro and slower vette.imo and known specs

2012 stang runs 12.4 in the 1/4 2012 camaro runs 12.0.that link is a 2010 camaro vs 2012 stang.[confused]
