Got into my first accident yesterday afternoon up in wisconsin around 2:30ish pm... Was going up and over a hill and it went into a hairpin turn. Which is something I've never dealt with before and it was also on a downgrade hill. No idea how much, but they were all new things to me. Started slowing down as soon as I noticed the turn getting sharper and sharper, but couldn't slow down enough with out going a little wide. Well the instant I go into the other lane, I side swipped a van going 45ish. Took the van on the left side of my body and thats pretty much all I remember untill I hit the ground. I didn't black out, I know that much. More importantly though, the mother and children were ok in the van, and thank goodness it was a van instead of a sedan. Otherwise, i believe I would have went off the side of the mountain.[confused]

Sorry I have no pictures for you guys. I havent seen the bike yet, I do know it is pretty messed up and not driveable.

Sorry to hear that. [sad] The alternative would have been hugging the turn and eliminating your chicken strips. [cool]

Injuries? Where you wearing a helmet? Jacket? Boots?

Buellxb is right about the alternative, but riding skills and the ablity to react instinctively come with saddle time.Main thing is that you are ok and will be able to ride another day;)Let us know how the bike came out of the ordeal when you get to oogall it.

Had some gear on. The FXRG jacket, which, protected my entire torso. Well it came up a little bit and I got a little rash on the lower back, but could have been much worse. I had my combat boots on which probably saved my left foot from being broken or worse. Just have a sprain and bad bruise there.

I didn't have any type of pants besides blue jeans. My left knee is pretty bad. Right knee, there are two abrasions there. Not to bad. Let this be a lesson to anyone who doesn't have any pants. GO GET SOME!!! Make sure they have armor in them or get armor to put underneath of them. If I would have had a decent pair of motorcycle pants on my left/right knees would be fine except for the impact, or so I believe anyway.

For the helmet I had the KBC modular helmet on that you can get from the harley shop. It served its purpose very well, as did the FXRG coat.

I was about 25-30 miles out from verona I believe. A prairie du chein cop was on the scene. So like I said, I'm not really sure where I was. But there was awesome scenery up there! Can't wait to get healed up and get up there again. Only this time, at a much slower pace.:(

Sorry not sure by chicken strips? I was trying to get in closer on the turn, but like I said not knowing the area, and going a little to fast. I was unprepaired for the downward hairping style turn. We don't have many of those in iowa...lol I was trying to break best I could, but if I woudl have laid the bike down without hitting the van. I fear I would have be much worse off.

Above all Phrogg, glad to hear that you're going to be alright. Be careful on the unfamiliar roads bro. I find myself thinking & preparing for the worst when topping a hill or a blind turn on a road I don't know. Sure, I'm not pushing as hard as I probably could, but I can always turn around and take it again if it's worth it. ;) Regardless, glad you're okay and Ride Safe. Hope you're bikes not FUBAR'd.

Chicken strips are the unused parts of your tire. The more chicken you are, the bigger the strips. Then again, it could also mean you don't know how to throw your wieght.
I know exactly what you mean when you said you were unprepared for the hairpin turn. I had a similar experience up in the hills. I came up on a turn a bit fast and decided I couldn't make it. Luckily there was no oncoming traffic. I just came to a stop on the other side of the road after locking em up while going across the both lanes. I came across another turn exactly like it a few minutes later, but I then grew some balls and tried it. It was surprisingly easy. I realized then that a confidence issue can be your biggest enemy.

you are ok to write about it...which is a good thing. [up]

when you get back on the bike, it will feel a bit acward and you'll feel unsure of yourself.
get over that fast otherwise, stupid things will happen.
some advanced rider and corner lessons is something that will give you back confidence and also give you more experience in how to react in corners when you're going to fast. ;)

If your a God fearin man, tell Him thanks.

One of the reasons I've always wanted a Buell is that I have been able to outride (so to speak) my sportster for a long time. I can't ride better than my Bull can handle though. It gives me something to achieve, and if I ever get in a real hairy spot I don't think I can handle, my bike can. That a good feeling to have that there's still something there when I think I'm at my max.

Glad to hear your ok Phrogg and hopefully everyone is taking it as a lesson to always wear there gear! You mentioned not having any downhill hairpin turns in Iowa, are you from there? I grew up in Iowa, but am living in TX now. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Ya, i live in iowa. My chicken strips are pretty good on the right side of my tire.lol Left, well i don't take a lot of left turns...:( I wish I did so I could even them out but, this is iowa.... We don't get a lot of crazy roads... I will have to get some pictures of the bike for ya. Plus, one of my knee when I get cord bike from a buddy. I had the paramedics take a picture of it before the bandage it up.:D

Hope you get better and don't get back on the bike until "you" are ready. A unconfident or nervous rider is a danger to him/her self.

when you're back on 2 wheels next season come to Winona MN. I can show you some nice routes over here :)

My last mishap :D left me with some hardware.
