is it possible to break down metals with something corrosive in space? i suppose that would also be hard to keep from effecting the things we want up there as well

hmm i suppose, but it wouldn't dissolve into nothing. There would still be the same amount of mass flying around, it would just be in a blob. Also, It would need to be applied to the debris somehow. Creative idea.
