Burning too rich at idle

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

ok couple of things that might be worth mentioning. Idle adjustment screw is not mounted at the front, it's just hanging, didn't think this would matter but then i saw a thread about it somehwere on this site.

Hole saw mod was done to the air box on this bike,a nd pretty lazily, just two large round holes cut out of either side near the rear, about 4 inches in diameter.

ecmspy has thrown back "tramission time out" a couple of times when doing the fuel pump diagnostic.

i did chickn's intake test with the carb cleaner at the throttle body but no change to idle.

Does this mean i need a new fuel pump or is it likely somewhere else?

could this be something dumb like bad gas or some other deposit clogging the fuel injector? I have some seafoam handy.

A fuel pressure test wouldnt hurt. Though that requires the tools.

Could be the pump is weak, could be the regulator on the pump assembly.

OK so, while i was away i did some stuff:

1 used carb cleaner on the throttle at the handle bar, it was pretty sticky and this seemed like a good time to sort that out, worked.

2 Added seafoam to gas tank, pretty sure i won't notice a difference from this until i've burned through a gallon or so of gas, but...

3 I cleaned the air intake with seafoam using a spray bottle, after which startup was better, reving was regular and idle was a little more stable though still low.

4 Oil change and filter change, just the main tank, i did the primary a few days ago when i replaced my clutch plates.

I'm gonna take a quick ride before the sunsets and see how she does, then i'll plug her back in to ecmspy. I'm assuming if i plug her in first, switch logging on and then quit the app, when i get back i can look at the log?

Here goes! (god i hope it was just some dumb clog in the injector.)

ok that ride felt awesome, throttle was snappy, almost no popping, stable idle but still low.

plugged her in as soon as i got back and afv is back down to 120%, and i'm hopeing will continue to drop as the new oil and seafoam clean out the system. I may well spray some more down the air intake tomorrow am.

pics to follow including one of my o2 sensor settings just cause i don't know what they should be so i'm hoping you guys can let me know if they're off or if it's worth reseting the o2 sensor anyway.

where does ecmspy save its logs? The for mono ver made a folder in docs but this older version hasn't.

Crash, no doubt its still lean, AFV is still 120% but there is a marked improvement. Idle is below 900rpm also so **** ain't right it's just running better.

Also i went to start her up tonight and nothing, starter turned over but wouldn't start engine. I',m wondering now if battery is an issue as it died off quickly while trying to start the bike.

Trickle charging now, if she starts tomorrow i'll shop for a new battery.

That and spray seafoam into the intake again

IIRC in the megalog folder.

definitely still not getting the right fuel. did the bike ever sit for a long time?

does the fuel pump make any funny noises during the prime?

more likely fuel pump related instead of injector. IMO, injectors are a lot more resilient than people give them credit for.

bike has not sat since i bought it. I did have a bit of a rough start issue at first but has gotten much worse.

fuel pump noise is regular, at least based on watch you tube videos of how they sound.

I also don't think it's a bad part in the efi system, injectors pump, coils all check out fine in the diagnostics, both cold and hot.

Also given that i'm at such an altitude do my air density correction numbers not seem off?

AD looks better now than it did in previous screenshots. but its not ONLY a factor of elevation.

resetting the o2? is it an LC1?

diagnostics in SPY wont detect a clogged fuel filter or strainer, or bad regulator. it has no way of sensing those attributes.

i would say do a datalog.

once i get the bike im working on back on the road, i am planning on making a post about the scatter plots and deciphering them to pinpoint issues of the sort. hopefully in the next few days....

gballas, that'd be super rad. You've been super helpful

So my ecmspy folder has nothing in the megalog folder. Think thinking the ecmspy for mono created the folder and old ecmspy doesn't know how to write to it, i will try reinstalling later today.

mean time i'm gonna look into the fuel filter, strainer, and regulator and see if i can find issues manually.

i'm not sure if it's LC1, i'm not really sure what that means but i can look it up.

Bike started right up this morning after tending the battery also, so i'm replacing it, i think it's not holding a charge well any longer.

Lc1 referring to a wide band oxygen sensor, yours is stock you do not have this.

Simple thing at this point would get a fuel pressure test done, a local auto parts store may be able to rent you the proper tools. Or if you have an automotive buddy with a master set should have the adapters you need.

yep. check pressures, id agree.

i think its got those funky ford type connectors up by the rail/injectors.

generally autoparts places will rent them for free with a 60-80 dollar deposit if youre up for checking it yourself. by no means is it out of your abilities. but you def dont wanna take it to a dealer to do it.
