Alright, I know that I have some miles on this tire, got it new in the beginning of sept and have since put about 3700 miles on it.
Any Ideas why it would only do this on about half the tire. The rest of the tire looks completely fine.

I noticed it the other day and it seemed like it just got worse and worse?

unbalanced rim? tire?
Gonna go get a pilot tomorrow but was just wondering if i need my rim balanced or if whoever put this thing on didnt do a good job.

Somehow I doubt the rest of the tire looks fine. You are worn almost to the cords.

When tires are made they are layered on a drum. The tread layer is two compounds extruded together, the cap and the base. The cap is what touches the road. It does not stick to the rest of the tire, so they have to extrude it with the base, and the base sticks to the rest of the tire.

Actually, the rest of the tire doesn't look anything like this. I wouldn't have said it if this were not the case.

how old is the bike/tire and how long was is just standing there?

it could be that the bike was standing in a non heated location for quite some time on the tire (no lift)

if it was a balance issue, you would deffinatly feel that during riding.

didnt think about sitting on a non heated location.. if that does it then that may be what did it cause we're gettin into the low 30's even high 20's at night and i still have it outside under my apt steps with a cover on it cause we get nice weather during the day.

Ehhh.. anyways, suppose i'll go get some pilots put on tomorrow..

I run mine to the cords about 4 times a year. They do the same thing. Certainly doesn't feel unbalanced. Maybe the tread cap is a mil deeper on one side of the mold.

I had a set begin to look like that from burn outs and hard take-offs[smirk] And it began in spots not just the whole tire.

I would go off what Lefox said if you are just cruising the bike and not doing anything like I mentioned.

Because you did something abrupt in that portion of the tire and it spread, if you were to ride it longer you would have that all the way around.

When you have a tire with that little rubber left on it all you really need to do is stare at it too hard and it will start to deteriorate/ delaminate. So abrupt could be something as simple as the initial load when taking off from a stop. Because it's such a common action you could have several of these "starting points"
And like chipping paint, once there is a place to start the rest follows easily.

Or at least that's my theory :D

that would be my guess too. Mine started doing that yesterday. All the way around the tire. Its also cupped. When u ride, that portion of the tire has the most contact with the road.

tires arent perfectly round and wheels arent perfectly round. Don't expect them to wear perfectly even.

Normal tire wear man, don't sweat it, but yeh, you do need to replace it soon, the center will always wear more than the sides, unless you are lucky enuff to live sumwhere you can spend half your miles dragging knees

how are the bearings and swing arm,any play in either? what psi are you running ,over inflated tires will do that. i had the same problem on my old ninja zx7rr ,i could not understand how it would wear down in the center after every ride...until my buddys rideing behind me told me the rear tire would go up in smoke eveytime i would go w.o.t. at any speed,i could not feel any spin.

Looks like a tire pressure issue to me, Running too much PSI.

You want a tire with good edge grip and still good travel wear, get a pilot road 2.

My tire did the same on a ride at Palomar Mountain. The wear started out in some spots and by the time I made the 70 mile trip back home it looked like this.

Got the nickname Sparky from the ride though, my buddy said he could see sparks from the tire as we would go from turn to turn. [confused][confused][confused]:D

lol thats pretty bad... Ehh.. I was pretty meticulous about tire pressues.. I'm going down the road and getting a couple of pilots put on today.

My tires always end up looking like this. Normal, its like extreme said burn outs and hard take offs ie Wheelies! :D

Oh? The rest of the tire isn't bald down the middle?
