Hey guys. So I installed the shift i on my 2009 XB12Scg. When I plugged the instrument cluster back in after wiring it in, the needles swept, but the tach stayed at 6,000 rpm. After cycling the ignition a couple of times, sometimes the tach sweeps, sometimes it doesn't, but it never goes below 6,000 rpm. I tried unhooking the shift light, but that didn't change anything. I'm sure it is wired right, pink wire tach, black/red ignition, black ground. I tried starting the bike, the tach went up to about 8,500 at idle, then dropped back to about 6,000 when I shut it off. Any ideas?

2 things come to mind. Maybe your shift light is proving resistance, OR you're grounding something that shouldn't be grounding. Check your insulation on your wiring that you've done.

Also, 2008 and 2009 clusters are ass backwards. The LED conversion doesn't work on them because of odd grounding. There is a chance it's just not compatible.

Thanks again for the replies, Dave. I went through all the connections, charged the battery, and unhooked the negative cable a few times and got everything back to normal. Tony at Ecliptech was also very fast with his response email. Not really sure what it was, but it works now!

How did you end up wiring it, i have a 2009 ss and has issues with mine, i have since taken it off the bike

Id love to hear what wires you ended up using etc

Matt

Dave, can you also explain the issue with the 2009 clusters, this may be my problem

Matt

I ended up using the tach from ic (instrument cluster). the ignition from ic, and a ground from right blinker. Not sure what my original problem was but I think it works now. Granted its -3 below and I'm not riding till spring. Good Luck fellers.

Not really. That is how I originally wired it up, the wires going into the cluster are so tight there wasn't really room for 3 connections.

Dave, any news about the difference in wiring, i had mine hooked to the cluster, all 3 wires

Hey guys. After a few rides, the problem is back, the tach is sticking again, not working at all. I got into the electrical manual and started the diagnostic procedure. The manual states that the tach should have "approxitmately 4.0 to 6.0 volts" on the pink wire at idle. Would you consider 6.7 volts to be within that range?

So I still don't know wtf is going on with the tach, but now I know its definitely the tach, not wiring or the ecm. Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it works. Screw it, I'm gonna ride it!

Sorry to necro a thread, but I solved this problem with a new IC. Not going to put face plates on this one, as I feel my ogre hands on the needles contributed to the problem.

Haha who needs gauges??:D No, I got it fixed shortly after the prior posts. I was looking through my old posts and realized I hadn't posted my fix. Nothing more irritating than having a problem, and not knowing how other people fixed. Just trying to get info out to help other people.
