ECM Spy

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

well, here goes my first mod. I had a Drummer, race ECM, and K&N set up but had to lose it for some warranty work. I cant afford the Drummer again, didnt see that big of a difference with the race ecm and kept the k&n. so I went with a Hawk Pipe found a copy of EcmSpy and bought the parts for the cable. I actually drove over to get the Buell connector plug, ordered the cable from Mouser, and am anxiously awaiting the delivery of my muffler. now i just have to hope i dont smoke anything when i put them together this week. I am also thinking about adding a few holes to the air box. Wish me Luck!

Can someone send me a Race Map for an 03 XB9s. I have the cable and program CD that was provided when i ordered but unfortunately the File Folder for the 03 XB9s Race Map was empty. so me needs one.

New ECMspy user with some questions. I've done a bunch of reading and messed with the program, loaded fuel maps to the bike and returned it to stock etc. but I'm still a little confused.

I have a 2006 xb12x with a drummer exhaust. I want to buy a race ecm, but can't afford it. I bought the ECMspy cable to change the stock ecm into a race ecm. The cable came with a disk with 2006 xb12 race ecm eeprom.

QUESTIONS:

I can't burn the race eeprom to my bike. I can burn race fuel maps to my bike. Is this normal?

I was under the impression that all you had to do was burn the race eeprom onto your ecm and you have the same thing as a buell race ecm. True or not?

One final question. Can I simply burn the race maps onto my bike and have the equivalent of a race ecm? I'm not looking for performance gains, I just don't want my bike to run lean.

THANK YOU for any help!

WB,

Yes, the EEPROMs are firmware dependent. The maps are still good.

Yes.

Yes, but the changes are minimal. I saw a huge difference when I started using the megalog viewer to view the data from me riding around. I used the new map as a starting point.

THANK YOU for any help!

Your Welcome!

I had issues burning the entire eeprom to the bike myself. No worries. Get the EEPROM from your bike, save it two places. One so you have a copy and one to modify. There are four maps on the 'Race' that you want to copy (they all get saved and written at the same time). front and rear fuel and front and rear timing tables. there are only two or three other changes to make, under diagnostics turn active muffler control and white cable to off and make sure all of the boxes under byte 5 are unchecked. these will stop the bike from reporting the active muffler control you want to remove because you are no longer using.

so
1. load the eeprom that has the desired maps.
2. save maps to file (all four go at the same time).
3. load a COPY of your eeprom.
4. load maps you just saved.
5. uncheck the active muffler control and white cable boxes.
6. save eeprom under another file name.
7. write eeprom to bike.
8. toggle ignition off and back on
9. set AFV to 100% (here I like to retrieve the eeprom from the bike to verify the changes took correctly)

I would suggest using the megalog viewer to see how it is running. While the new map was a huge improvement to my bike I had to play with it a little so the AFV would stay close to 100%.

Be careful about trying to burn the race eeprom to your stock ecm. There have been reports of bricking the ecm. The best thing that you can do is do data logging. I had the race maps with the timing as well but it ran like crap. So I kept the original timing and returned it back to stock and did some logging. It runs so much smoother now without the surging.

Not to be misunderstood, I have completely created my own maps through the logging, though i imported the other map as a starting point. I already knew mine was running very lean and chose to start there. the bike runs much cooler now. I have thought about trying the new maps I created with the original timing too, but haven't gotten to it yet. as dallas said this is the best method, no two bikes are the same, some are close but best results are seen with a map made custom for your bike. it is very easy to do, just takes a little time.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll be adding in the maps as per the instructions provided by twistedrose. I am not comfortable doing all the data logging and tuning, this "simple" ECMspy stuff is a stretch for me already! [smirk]

SO... it didn't work. Copied the maps from the race eeprom into my stock eeprom and saved it. Then I tried to burn the stock eeprom w/ race maps onto my Uly. It said the ECM was incompatible. Then I open the race maps and tried to burn just the maps onto my bike, one at a time... same result. ECM is incompatible. SO I just did a TPS reset and I'm crossing my fingers that its not running too lean. Thanks for your help guys.

Sorry to tack another one on... my AFV was at 94% when I finished. Do I need to reset it to 100% when running the stock maps?

Thank you in advance.

I bought ECMSPY over ebay. I'm trying to install the cable and keep getting a message similar to "com port not found" . The ECM apparently is not commuicating with the computer program. Any ideas what is causeing this??

yes thanks! It's loaded and connects with the ECM on the bike. Now, I need the correct race maploaded into the ecmspy so I can burn it to the bike's eeprom? That is what I should do correct?

dont burn the whole eeprom file from a race ecm to a stock ecm. you only burn the maps. Burning the whole thing make is not run and sometimes it jams up the ecm where only the factory can fix it. You dont want this.

I sent a guy here the files on a zip file to load for you guys here.

Maybe a need to do a maps only zip file. for the ecms.

even when you get the maps only you are still missing a lot of other functions not seen in ecmspy but seen in the hex data and tunerpro.

you don't have to burn the eeprom at all. you can burn the maps independently from the eeprom. there are several different firmware or versions out on these ECMs. They will not take an eeprom from a different firmware. here is what i am doing.

1. click 'fetch eeprom' to get eeprom from bike. the reason i do this is to verify communication with the bike and to see what the afv is at.
2. load desired map from file.
3. burn map to bike.
4. toggle ignition off then on
5. set afv to 100%.
6. fetch eeprom from bike and verify changes to maps and afv

things to check...
1. you have a compatable ECM.
2. you built the cable correctly and the drivers are properly installed.
3. you plugged the cable in before opening the program.
4. the key and engine switch are "on".

another note, you can fetch your eeprom and look at your maps. you can then change all of the values manually and click burn maps or burn eeprom, just remember there are four maps. because it is your eeprom from your bike there should not be a compatibility issue. i was not able to use the eeprom that was emailed to me from a friend, but i was able to extract the maps from it and use those. really the best method is still to hook it up and take it for a ride (data logging) and let your bike tell you what it wants. it will fill in the values for you, you just want to look to make sure there is no 0's or 100 point changes.

hope this helps.

I bought the cable off ebay and it came with the race map I need for a 2006 XB12ss. Problem is I started tinkerering with it too early. Now it will start up but it runs really bad and backfires. I have what I thought was the original eeprom and maps back in it. I've made a drummer out of the muffler, airbox delete,K&N, mods. I have NOT been able to load anything other than the stock because when I try to load the race map after pushing "file" load map, it isn't available and when I try to open it they are only text files. Could that be teh reason? Maybe I have some incorrect maps? My firmware is BUELB310 calibration ID 54:US. Please give me a map I can load in! I can't even ride it because it runs so bad and pops and stuff.
