OK so I'm riding the bike and it starts sputtering a little mainly on the deceleration. So I take the plugs out a clean them with a bead blaster and reinstall them. The bike runs great on the way home from the shop. Then when I'm on the way to my local bike night it starts doing it again slightly. It get progressively worse the whole trip, then about half way its running terrible and bogging and backfiring hard on deceleration. Then It pretty much shut off on me. I managed to limp it back to the house. I need to mention that this bike has the race ignition in it. If you know about these engines I'd appreciate any input from you. Thanks

race ignition or ecm???

also, what was the colour of your plugs?

any other mods? mileage? last service? tps reset?

I meant to say race ecm:p but it also has a race exhaust. The bike has 10k miles on it. When I took the plugs out they were black. I've never reset the tps. Can someone tell me how?

your engine is running too rich.

what year is your bike and when was last service?
how long have you had the bike, how long have you had this type of problem?
did you change anything to the setup when you started having the trouble?

well we actually took of the air box and intake assembly to get to the throttle body when I was looking at my throttle cables. It started after we did that but I inspected it and everything looks the same. I'm just trying to avoid taking it to a Harley dealership and spending hundreds.

Did you re-connect the IAT sensor when you re-assembled the airbox? I don't know if that would trigger the Check Light or not. While you're verifying that, check to see that the ignition wires are tight on the ignition coil. My wires work their way loose once in a while, so I check them regularly.

i had a very similiar problem on an 01 x1. i must have tried a dozen sets of plugs, changed wires and cleaned out the air intake several times. even my buddy who used to be a mechanic for harley could not diagnose the problem. when i finally took it into the dealership it was the engine temp sensor. believe it or not that will make it miss and sputter like its an ignition problem. it's a cheap fix and worth checking into.

UPDATE: So between my last ride and yesterdays ride I torn everything back down and disconnected and reconnected every electrical connection i could see. Apparently I hit the right one because it rode perfectly. I probably drove it 15 miles and I had no trouble from it. ODD[smirk]
