I have spent some time in Centeral Europe and notice Motorcyclest in city traffic preforming what I have learned is termed "Filtering". Filtering seems to be legal there... But do you know a quick list of guild lines to it?

Is it legal here (State-Side)? I see in large cities here in LA and NYC a few doing it in stationary traffic but is it legal?

depends on the state your in, where I live it is not, it is considered reckless driving, and improper use of lanes

In Idaho its considered wreckless driving, w/ 6 month suspension and a driving class completion to get your license back.

Filtering? Is that riding the center line between cars? or Splitting lanes as my fellas call it?

It's wreckless driving here in Phoenix. But that doesn't stop us.

When it's 110 degrees out, you'll do anything to keep moving. ;)

Right, having a badge on your hip doesn't hurt either!! but yes it is driving between cars

I currently live in Southern CA. and it is LEGAL.

It's awesome being able to ride behind another biker ahead of you splitting lanes, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE'S A COP :D

But in NYC, it is illegal. I'm out here right now and noticed other bikers on the road yesterday restricted within their lanes.

Ya it is legal in Ca if traffic is stopped or moving real slow. I almost always split lanes at traffic lights but in stop and go traffic there is a fine line as to what is legal and what isn't. It is deffantly not legal when traveling at the speed limit.

In CA, it definitely IS legal up to the speed limit. But it is not legal to travel 15mph faster than the vehicles you are passing.

I do it everywhere, double yellow, intersections, where ever. I've done it buy cops just about everywhere as well. The trick is to give them a friendly wave and acknowledge that they're there.

Your are wrong.....I believe.

About a year ago I researched it. I live in Nor CAL. I spoke with the CHP's office as well as the Sherrif's office and got similar answers from both. There is no clear definition of "lane sharing", legal term, and it is at the officers disecretion to make a judgement. You can lane share legally up to the speed limit.

Now an officer might find lane sharing at the speed limit to be "wreckless driving" and site you but it's legal. As long as your not breaking any other laws and the cop felt you were being safe.

Here is a good forum to read about it

Does anyone know whether it is legal in Oklahoma or not? Im guessing no because I have never seen anyone do it...

We got it good out here in Cali!

Girls, weather, buells, and lane sharing!

What more could you ask for:p

You can share lanes with other motorcycles at any speed but if two big rigs are going 55 side by side down the freeway where the speed limit is 65 and you split between them at 65 (less than 15 difference) is it legal to do?

I think some are confusing lane sharing with splitting.

It is legal in almost all states to lane share (two bikes side by side), but the only state that allows splitting (going between cars) is CA. Here is some more info...
State motorcycle laws

Nice link 03Firebolt.

Whoa, according to that, the highest allowable Max. speed of any state, whether urban or rural, is 70mph. That doesn't make sense.

I break that just commuting back & forth to work and I'm not even hurrying when going TO work. [smirk]

Yeah, some other odd things are the amount of states that "require" eye protection. Who rides without eye protection anyway? Also laws against radar detectors.

In CA I lane split, share, and "Filter(ing)". However you want to call it.

When traffic is going 60 stop and go on the "FWY" I'll lane split those cars at a little faster rate of speed depending on the texture of traffic ahead (clogged lanes/open lanes).

With the help of my Buell Race Kit, cars always hear me coming through the lanes with my RPM's at 4500. Just as a courtesy, whenever I see cops, I'll slow it down or whatever the case may be, NO MATTER WHAT.

I just love cops, sorry [cool], always wanted to be one, but in the "MOTORS" department. Just my career never died down and allowed me to enter into the academy. Guess I was never supposed to be in Law Enforcement.

Lane "Splitting" is not a legal term. It's like calling your ol lady Phat!

Check the link I posted a few comments up and you'll see what California cops have to say about lane sharing. Even motorcycles need to be staggerd while riding together, caps can deem side by side riding as unsafe and pull you over.

Just stating the CA law does not specify "splitting".

Again, lets not confuse "splitting" with "sharing". There are 37 states that it is legal to "lane share" which is two motorcycles sharing the same lane, hence the term.

CA is the only state that allows "lane splitting" which is when motorcycles drive in between cars. It is also legal to lane share in CA.
