I have a slow pulsing feeling in my front break, but I'm not convinced that I have a warped rotor. I think I have a glazed spot. My dealership thought that it was my break pads, so they put on new pads. $90 later, it seemed my problem was fixed, but after my pads wore in, the issue continued. That's what makes me think that I have a glazed spot. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I'm actually having the same problem, well maybe not the same but somewhat similar. I changed my front pads to the EBC double HH due to the fact the front started to squeak during braking. After a few tanks of gas, I still have this slight pulsation and now somewhat of a harmonic whine instead of a squeak when braking. I can't figure out what it might be. I think I might just have to break down and rebuild the caliper.

dave,

- remove rotor
- buy new bolts (if your rotor is shot, you'll need them anyways)
- place the rotor on a 100% flat surface and see if there's a space or if you can move it when applying top pressure
- if so, rotor is crooked / if not, clean with brake cleaner
- refit according to specs.

you will also have to go over your new pads with cleaner & a bit of sandpaper. ;)

Thanks Lefox. Will break cleaner remove glazing?

I'm thinking of glass bead blasting it just because if it's not warped.

Now I need a stand of some sort.

Dave,
If you have to a piece of window glass is about as flat as you can get in a normal house, not many of us have access to a surface plate.

good point, it was still early for me...;)

honing the rotor should help, best would be by machine...a drill would do.

220 grit sandpaper would take off any built up brake dust, as that can cause some wobbly feeling. Do not hold front brake at stops; use rear brake only. People report warping of rotors from front brakes used regularly at stops.

Are all your rotor mounting points flexing? The way it is designed, you should be able to press on side of rotor and deflect the rotor a little bit (1/16"?). This may be why LeFox mentioned new bolts/mounts.

Good sintered pads, like "Braking" CM55's.

dont forget that the parts where the rotor mounts get gummed up with brake dust easily. once the rotor no longer floats at one of the mounts, you get pulsation.

EDIT: oops, fahren pointed this out... go around the rotor as he describes

Yeah all the points are floating. I'm convinced its glazed. Now I just need to take the front wheel off. It's hard not having a shop or garage anymore.

i've used a ladder and tie-downs to hold up the front end of the XB before :D not pretty, but it worked. (floor jack under can too)

Dave dont waste your time and money trying to blast the rotor you have that probably is warped. I had the same issue with mine and just spent 45 bucks for a new rotor. And I got Harley to warranty the install when they replaced my master cylinder at the same time :p

And is your bike out of warranty? Was just wondering why you'd pay 90 bucks for some pads. That should all be free from Harley.
