I have a 2006 XB12X. Only 13,500 miles actual on it. Tune-up and oils change three weeks ago. Plugs were changed too. Rode it for a weekend and all seemed fine. Bike sat for a week with the trickle charger on it. Today I fired it right up and the red check engine light came on and stayed on. I shut the bike off. Checked oil-it was fine.
I cycled the key three times then started the bike again the light stayed on. Engine sounded fine. No throttle lag, no upper engine noise. I went for fuel and after restarting the engine the red engine light went out. I rode about 30 miles. During this ride various electrical issues ensued. Both blinkers would stop indicating on the gauge pack that they were on . At stop signs the green Neutral light would not light up when I wanted to find Neutral on the gauge pack. I pulled over and pushed on the gauge pack, thumped it with my index finger fighter pilot style and still no lights to indicate everything was up and running. Blinkers did blink. Tail lights did glow. Headlights were working I headed for home and suddenly it all started working again as if nothing was ever wrong. What do you think.. Bad ground? Wiring harness connection issues? No service codes popped up so any help would be appreciated. I have a bigger road trip coming next weekend.

Check your voltage regulator. There is a white connector that others have had issues with.I believe it connects the regulator to the stator.

Awesome! I neglected to say that I changed the pulley and the drive belt at the same time I did the tuneup. The pulley, swing arm pivot idler was out and causing belt wear.

If those seem solid, check that the plug is solidly connected to the cluster and that nothing is forced against it. My cluster would randomly not bring back the RPM's and hang or not set to the left after the sweep they do when starting up. It turned out when I installed dual HID's all the extra crap was pushing on the harness to the cluster and intermittently causing these issues.

If you have any add on items like the hid's and such, temporarily disconnect them and start your diagnosis. I've been doing 12v for 20 some odd years, seen some interesting installs and you never know what your going to find. Best to start with a clean slate.
