I'm sure this has been answered but I can't seem to find my issue on the forum. Sorry. Any help would be great. I just bought an 03 9R! Everything is great except the headlights. Very weak battery too. When I turn on the key with the low beams on I get nothing. I turn on the high beams and both come on. SOMETIMES the low beam light dims up and down. If I go back to low they go off. When I press the pass button they both come on. Can a weak battery cause this? I kinda doubt it. Thanks for any and all help. Keep in mind I am by no means an electrical guy but do understand generally how things work. All fuses good! Both lights are good and I don't see any loose connections. Thanks

I live in New York. We need hi and low beam to pass inspection. That's my only concern. The person I bought it from said they recently changed a light. The wires were crammed all over under there but everything looked good.

Definitely not right. The low beam should be on without having the high beams on. You'll need to check all the wiring and compare to the wiring diagrams for the bike. Check the links at the top for the service manuals that have the wiring diagrams in them.

I just noticed he has a long wire harness going to the battery all the way up to the lights. It's been spliced into the factory wiring. WTH? Could he have tried to do one of those super bright light kits? I don't know what to do at this point. Way over my head now that I see this crap!!!!

It's probably not as bad as you think. Take a time out and approach the situation methodically and with a multimeter and the wiring diagrams in hand.

Where are you located?

Okay.....after some research I've come to realize the guy must have done a HID headlight kit. So I just need to know how to make the low beam work for inspection. I'm also assuming he must have wired it so both lights are on together. Gotta be a way to shut one off for low beam?!?!?

look at the wiring plug for your headlight assembly. now look at the wiring plug from the main harness that plugs into it. 4 identically colored wires? are they black/orange/yellow/white? if not what are they? report back and i'll walk you thru the checklist and repair. what everyone above is telling you is correct as usual.

So I kinda see what he did. The high beam light is directly wired so it stays on always! All the switch wires go to the low beam. I don't get why they both go off when I switch to low beam????

here's what you should have and what you should do. follow these steps to trouble shoot and fix the problem. remove any false wiring that you mentioned earlier.
wires do the following:
black is ground
orange is 12 volt positive all the time
yellow is 12 volt positive for low beam
white is 12 volt positive for high beam
seperate the plugs at the harness and get a good test light.
hook 1 end of test light to ground and use the probe end to do the following checks:
turn on ignition key and you should see gauge needles sweep. set hi/low handlebar switch to low beam.
now take test light and probe the wires in the socket end of the harness.....NOT the headlight assembly end plug....the harness end plug: orange should be hot....black should test good as ground....yellow should be hot.
turn handlebar switch to high beam. orange should be hot....white should be hot....yellow should be dead.
stop there. is this what you have? if yes then plug in harness to headlight bucket harness and try it. if no you'll have to trouble-shoot what the problem is.

Okay. I turned the kill switch to on. Now I get power at low when switch is on low and I get power on high when the switch is on high. So the connector is getting power where it should. Correct?

I'm guessing the issue is with the kris crossed wires. Because after the connector he has yellow going to high and white going to low. If I'm getting this all straight it should be the other way!!!!
