High Beam light stays on, but no Headlights

The noise I am hearing is only when the key is in the on position, and the kill switch is in the off position, and the "high beam signal" button is pressed. So it cannot be the stator if the engine is not running. Could it be a relay not grounding properly? Is there even a relay for the headlights? The noise sounds to be coming from the area beind the frame above the the trans.

Youll have to get a closer look at the noise. That most likely where your short is. And you wouldnt be able to really hear it when your kill switch is on because of your fuel pump. It might be a pain in the ass but you have to look at where that noise is coming from. A wire is probably shorting out on the frame. Trace your wiring harness back.

save this pic, use paint to circle where the noise is and repost

That is what I was thinking, that a wire might be grounding to the frame. But why when I press the "high beam signal" button do the lights come on? Is that because they are grounding to that switch?

Where do the bulbs ground to from the back of the bulbs? The frame where the fork bearings are in front of the stamped VIN#?

Did you check the grounds in the headlights? Take the rubber boot off and check those grounds too.

I can only find 1 ground between the fork and the frame(one by the VIN#) and it was clean and tight, and the one under the seat by the battery was the same.

Boots removed, and replaced the bulbs too just in case. Good tight fit on both.

the ground wire plugs into the metal plate that hold the bulb in (the wire running through the boot you didn't have to unplug). mine failed and I made new ones that I grounded to the fairing stay

where I grounded to

if you have a spare piece of wire it's worth looking into

I will try that as well. Thanks for the heads up on that one. And thanks to all who have chimed in as well with ideas. I called HD and they won't even talk to you about it. "Just bring it in and for $69.95 we can diagnose it for you" Damn stealership.

Could the problem be in the ignition itself? Not sending the power to the lights when the key is turned on....?

I have noticed that sometimes when I turn the key on, that my dash doesn't always turn on. I have to wiggle the key a bit and then it powers up the dash and guages reset. Shouldn't the key turing the ignition on complete the circuit to turn the lights on?

Sounds like your winter project is going to involve a good look over everything electrical!:D

I had this same problem, and my headlight plug was also fused together making it impossible to pull apart. I just ran a jumper wire from one side of the plug to the other (Black wire) Just a short piece of wire and two butt connectors...

I know another 2003 buell owner having low beam issues and speedometer issues....I'm going to follow this thread.
