Ok, every one getting their ******* in a panic. For those of you who dont believe that full synthetic oil is longer lasting,cooler, and the coating better protects your gears, then please feel free to go buy regular oil and run your motor hot and we all promise you that for every 3000 miles we ride your riding 3100 ish. The heat reduction that Amsiol, Castrol GTX and Mobil 1 Synth V-Twin does extend the life of your motor. They run this **** in motors next to the same motors with every leading brand of oil that how they test this stuff, viscosity brake down over run time+heat= Do what you want, its science.

i notice a all around positive difference with amsoil. it is to me the same difference i notice when i switched from oil to synthetics.

To be honest I do not know what they recommend. I know it is much longer then 2500 miles, but I change it just to do it. I ride my bike 100+ miles a day for work and school, in the middle of CA where it gets pretty toasty outside, dry heat.
The manual says if you ride in excess of 65+ mph, ride in weather that is over like 80 f. you should change your regular motor oil n such every 2500 instead of 5k.

So with that in mind I like to change my Mobil 1 every 2500-3500 miles,
Again just to be safe, I know it doesnt hurt

I'm game to use whatever is best. I need my xb12s to live as long as possible [smirk]

Oh another thing, I have a pretty busy schedule, so wrenching my bike is a nice way for me to relax... dunno but keeping the oil clean is definitely very important.

** I am NOT a mechanic, more an electrical guy, this xb is my FIRST big v-twin, only owned a blast before the XB. So I am still learning.. but I like fake oil better then the real stuff.

I hve been running full synthetic since 2002 in my cars, trucks, and bikes and never looked back. Just put 6k on my trucks last oil change which was spread out over 12 months run through the winter and summer, on road and abused off roa and the oil looked just as good coming out as it did going in.

I've been running full synthetic since the first oil change in my 12S. First it was the Syn3, then I started experimenting. Tried Mobil 1 because that's what I run in my cagers. Then I tried Royal Purple. Hands down that purple drank is the worst liquid I've ever put in a machine. The V-twin burned through it at alarming rates. Something to the tune of 300 miles per quart. I was thinking it was a valve guide problem like some others have had on this forum. I switched to Redline 20W-50 and decided to just do what I can to keep it topped off until winter when I'd be able to get the motor opened up. My consumption issue has gradually slowed to almost normal Harley rates though. So moral of my story, RP can suck it!

Ya, because of how thin syn gets when its hot. It becomes just like water.

Just cause it can stand high temps doesnt mean the elasticity stays the same.

elasticity huh, i think you mean viscosity. dont use engineering terms if you dont know what they mean.

apparently you dont understand the SAE requirements for the oil. 20w50 oil has to meet certain viscosity requirements. in multigrade oils it means that the oil must meet the 20w viscosity requirements at 0°C and 50 viscosity requirements at 100°C. All oils sold as 20w50 will have the same viscosity, oil does break down over time and the viscosity will become lower at higher temperatures but the synthetic oils will last longer. If it has the API logo it has been tested according to SAE standards.

Straw and all who do,We Stock and Use Redline & I have been using it for years.I've been using Amsoil for Over 25/years. It's Cheap NOW! My Bike Transmission loves the Redline Fluid. You can get good results with Synthetic Amsoil Gear 75/90 in the Tranny as well.
I've Never had trouble with the Neutral or moving parts of the Primarys area on any of my Buells. I changed the Stator months ago XB12R/08. Nice & clean the Internal parts Were, and the nearly 16,000miles on the Primary Chain Adjuster the Clutch Basket bearings, spotless just a bare couple of marks on the Adjuster & the Thrust Washers were no marks at all.I have Changed many of those parts on customers Bikes. Most are just uninformed to buy the better brands. Yes,the Synthetic oils (all thin out) when hot [IT's] supposed to. Duh! The Heat Activates the oil to slightly thin and slip through lubing faster and better than many oils.I have noticed even slightly lower oil pressure after warmed up due to Better Lubracation & less friction.
There are a lot of good Oils out there,as well as Tranny fluids. Each has an Opinion of course. I was in Military Marine Aircraft Wing OR[MAW]214, for nearly 18,years and this is what helped me learn the Value of [good] Oils Verses (Great) Oils. Some Oils are used for Specific Jobs and thats all that can be used..Always Read a Manual on the Vehicle.
Yes it will specify their brand. Once you actually see the difference from Schooling and testing facilitys' it becomes clear. Now you can't use Syn., oils in some cases Depends on what is Designed.
Bikes however or Vehicles in General Public use it's mostly a Choice. (Stick to what you have found out) and your Vehicle will reward you with less internal problems in the future with good maintenance.It takes research to change over to a New Brand OR just watch your Mechanic if they are good cause we hate to work on our own Rides no MONEY in it.
Upgrades not included! I have caught many a Customer buying the same brands as our Shop. We don't like call backs! If someone doesn't like Synthetic Brands then Change it [often] with the Reconmended Brands and it will work well.Ride Safe*Jimi[smirk][up]
