So I we've had a lot of rain lately. I was out driving when I came to a street that was pretty flooded. It was deep, but still passable. I proceeded to cross the flooded area when my car starts making this terrible knocking sound, then it makes a loud clunk and I guess it seized up. My mechanic tells me I "hydrolocked" the motor. He says this is caused by too much water going into the intake. Well, I'm furious, I JUST serviced my car, the place that serviced it replaced my oxygen sensor and it cost me $678. If there is water in there, shouldn't it tell me and shut the car off or something? Maybe they didn't replace it? Maybe it's bad? I think I'm going to sue the shop that serviced the car.
 
Your car wouldn t be able to tell you about the water. Your mechanic is suggesting that the water was ingested via the intake, and entered the engine that way. Was the water crossing that deep? I m a licensed auto mechanic, so if you have more questions, let me know. What kind of vehicle are you driving? The oxygen sensor can only sense oxygen in the exhaust. nothing else. Try removing the spark plugs, cranking it over to expel the water, then shoot some oil into the cylinders and install the plugs. Cross your fingers that you didnt bend a rod.
 
A motor gets hydrolocked when water enters the intake manifold when driving through deep water. The water ultimately pours into the combustion chamber area in each cylinder the same way the air should and then floods the motor leaving no room for air or fuel to enter let alone mix to combust. Water is not an element that can be compressed, so once its in there it effectively locks up the motor from rotating. It will most likely need to be replaced or thoroughly rebuilt.

Your O2 sensors have nothing to do with sensing air or water in your engine, they essentially sniff your exhaust to adjust air-fuel ratios within the motor.

Unfortunately you really have no viable law suit as there is no way you can prove they did or didn't replace the O2 sensor and no amount of properly functioning O2 sensors would have saved you from turning your car into a U-Boat.
 
The big question I have is, did YOU get wet driving through this passable water? Did the inside of the car where the seat is get flooded? Water up over the hood?

If it was up high enough to get you and the interior of the car wet, then the mechanic may very well be right. If the water was only up to the even the top of the tires on the outside, then no. How deep was the water you went through?
 
I would definitely point the finger at a hydrolocked engine as your mechanic pointed out. The fact that it was knocking before suggests that you may have bent a rod.

Chris had some pretty good guidance - take out ALL spark plugs (you may even want to pull the fuse so that you don't actually have the voltage there) and maybe even pull the fuse for the fuel pump/injectors. Then crank it over - if you can get an inspection camera, that would be a good way to go as well.
 
what kind of car?never drive your car down a flooded street.o2 sensor dosnt have common sense it cant tell you a streets flooded stop.more than likely your screwed.
 
You paid 678 for an oxygen sensor? I sure hope they changed other things too. Hydrolocking is a definite possibility. How fast were you going? And how deep was the water?
 
Depanding on the car air intake somtimes are in the stupidest places. around the heaplight or in the inner fender.

Depanding what kind rpm you were turing it either just hydro locked and didn't do damage or it. Bent a whole lot of ****. Crank rod broke pistons.
Pull the plugs wing it over reinstall plugs.
See how it runs.
Up at silver lake there is huge puddles and the look shallow but most are 6+ feet deep.
I whatched a jeep drive in one and had to pull the plugs twice to get it running.
if it does run afterwards change the oil and check the transmission fluid. if its an auto and looks like strawberry milk change it to.


Ps if you have full coverage. it is a road hazard and they will cover that
 
yea a guy on the jeep forum i go to sometimes hydrolocked his grand cherokee hitting a big puddle and his insurance company paid for everything. he somehow even convinced the dealer to rebuild it with a 6.1L hemi from the srt instead of the 5.7 he originally had.

I do worry about hydrolocking sometimes. My CAI is right next to my fender well. I know it needs to be totally submerged, but a foot of water really could do it.
 
If you do the breather re-route mod and a tps reset you should be fine...I stayed at a best western.

You suck! :)That's funny though. I was posting on facebook about how I need to make a lockout device so if I'm over .08 I cannot use my keyboard. I also need one for my phone too, no drunk texting. I do dumb ass **** online when I'm buzzed.

I know, that's where I failed. I should have made a new SN, that way people would be more likely to say funny things.
