J don,
I am also fairly new to riding on the street as my 30+ years of riding has been motocross and hare scrambles. When I first rode the XB12 I respected it as I did the first time I threw a leg over a modern 450 motocrosser, which totally blew my mind. As these fine folks told you it is of the utmost importance to wear your gear, as you never know what is around the corner. I have learned that as you get to know the bike and it's ability, on the street it's not so much what you can do on the machine as it is keeping an eye on the other idiots driving on 4 wheels. Bouncing off of trees and other riders on the track is a hell of alot easier to predict than running into an idiot on the cell phone going down the road. Be safe! Crewdog
