Hey I was riding my Lighting today and was sitting at a stop light abd all of sudden the bike killed. When to restart it and everything was dead so I pulled the key out and turned the ignition back on and everything seemed fine and it started back up. Well I got about five more miles down the road and at about 45mph the bike died again and I had to coast to a stop. The needles on the dash stayed in the position they were in when the bike lost power. I had it hauled to harley abd they found a blown fuse and said the battery could be replacef. They replaced the fuse and the bike started right up no problems. I have to go tomorrow and pick it back up but I qas just wondering if anyone knows what happened? I've put over 200 miles on the bike this year with no problems. Thanks

Did they tell you what fuse blew? Battery, fuel pump, etc?

It is a good idea to buy extra fuses and carry them in your toolkit, along with the spare slots in your fuse box.

I have yet to find out, when I took the bike in they were getting ready to close and just took a quick look and called me and said it was just a fuse. I was just wondering if a fuse could blow out for no reason. I'm worried it could be somethibg more. The bike ran great and then just died..no engine lights or anything

did they tell you what fuse? (edit: i see someone also asked this) could be a short somewhere. something could be going bad and drawing too much current. its hard to say for sure, first you need to identify what circuit and start checking components from there. maybe the buell gremlins were angry with you. i wouldnt worry unless it happens again. carry extra fuses.

check your cables that plug into your ECU for any bare spots. Mine did that same thing, and blew a fuse.

And, if I may add, look for any bad contact points at places like the negative ground connection from the battery, loose terminals, etc.

Yeah the mph and the tach both. The first time it happened and I got it back running the clock had even set back to 12:00. Thanks for all the help guys :) I'm ready to get her back and see if the problem continues.

I had the same exact thing happen yesterday.Mine started with the engine light then went into the dash going dead and engine stopping. I pulled over and took the seat off and moved the neg. cable I drove it home and removed cable and filed down ALL contact points and cleaned batt. terminals reassembled. Started fine took it down the road for about a mile. did the same thing, My bike is also a xb12scg got it home and ran out of time to work on. Any ideas cause its not going to HD dealer.

Whoever was killed I'd like to convey my sincere condolences. God rest their soul [sad]

I had a very similar problem with my 05 XB12S continuing to blow the 30A fuse so I painstakingly went through most of my bike looking for rubbed wires and loose/bad grounds but did not find any. Next, based on a few prior posts on this site I borrowed a multimeter and did a thorough battery check (and test) and still nothing. I checked the 77 connector and other behind the sprocket cover for worn wires and fouled connections and again nothing.

Finally I got a strange reading on a voltage regulator test and pulled the regulator and the back was cracked and warped...the likely culprit! Now waiting on my replacement regulator! Also will check know the stator to insure it isn't the root of the problem.

After reviewing posts on this site, the "other" related sites, and the net, it seems that similar problems are not rare and beside the 77 connection, wiring issues behind the flyscreen (including horn wire), stator and regulator problems are usually the culprit once you determine a worn wire or ground is not the issue.

Just got the bike back, it was the ignition fuse they replaced it and put a new battery in. They said the terms were alittle loose on the battery. Rode it home with no problems. I got some extra fuses just in case :D thanks for the input everyone!

Ok took the Buell for a ride tonight and it happened again lost all electric went through all connectors fuses and neg. cable. I then touched the positive cable and BAM everything turned back on so i looked under the red cover on terminal and found the problem loose wires in the connector on pos. side.

Glad you're back up and running and know what to watch for. I popped a fuse for my fuel pump one day as I was riding. Seems like it happens when you're running low on fuel and hot weather. I just popped in a new fuse, and started right up. doesn't have anything to do with your problem, but just something else to consider if your bike ever quits on ya and refuses to restart. Always check fuses first...and fuel. ;)

Glad you got it figured out redrider, i took my buell out today also and all was good seemed to just be the fuse.

with the occasional rider getting killed, probably a better title for a thread.....just saying.

hope you get it figured and resolved.
