Hello everyone, I took my 07 Firebolt XB12r to the Harley Dealer where I bought it from for a 10,000 mile service. First they estimate it to be under $320 before I dropped it off. Call me back 2 days later to say its gonna be more than what they thought it was supposed to be. Then call back to say I have a Leaky Rocker Box and they need to replace them. that added 350 bucks to my total so I take it in thinking Im gonna pay about 360 dollars but now my total is up to 875... has anyone have a problem with their rocker boxes or gaskets around 10,000 miles and am I being ripped off? [confused] any advice is appreciated

What? Evo rocker boxes leak? What a surprise.

I know in Sportster land, it was mainly due to the the rocker boxes warping from heat. Really though, if it's just a bad gasket you can do it yourself for about $50 worth of parts. If it's a warped rocker box, some folks have had them machined down to be true again. Not sure I would consider doing that unless I was really low on $$$.

My rocker box has been leaking for 8,000 miles now and it hasn't caused any problems. Price is expensive but they have to rotate the motor to replace the gasket. I was told by a mechanic that the main thing i had to worry about, was the oil getting on my cooling ffan and burning up that motor. I just keep the area clean 'til I can drop the motor myself. (this spring)

Can someone please find the thread with the detailed description on how to rotate the engine.

Do the XBs still use paper gaskets where the lower piece bolts to the head? The paper ones fail at about 10000 miles. Cometic brand gaskets use a rubber coated steel lower that will last untill the motor needs rebuilt.

My Rocker Box gaskets went out too. I was throwin oil like the old man reffing a KY Wrestling match

Always let these motors warm up before you jump on them and should never never have this problem.

Can you post the pic so I'm sure I have the same problem and we are talking about the same thing, please. Thank you.

no the rocker box gaskets are actually rubber gaskets. there are some paper gaskets where the screws hold on cover. i replaced my paper gaskets recently and they were almost nothing(i think like $.10 a piece). you might have to replace the rubber gasket which i would imagine not be terribly expensive. rotating the engine isn't that difficult. hope this helps
