Does anyone have experience or know how anal VA cops are about license plate lights? I have one LED bolt in the middle shining on my license plate since I hacked my cheese grater... it barely lights it up...

That's what I assumed... Thanks. I guess it also depends on how big of a D the cop wants to be as well...

Look up transportation code regarding LP lamps to ensure compliance.

Some cops may stop you while most won't. Doesn't make the cop a bad guy, he's doing his job. Ride legally, and responsibly, and you wont get citations or handcuffed.
Many fugitives have been caught from a simple traffic stop resulting from a simple violation such as License plate violations, Brake light, etc. Including Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy Mcveigh.

Here in Texas, Transportation code states that the LP must be illuminated well enough to be discernible/ clearly legible from within 50'. Also, the lamp must be white in color, or clear for the wise cracks.

I usually let people roll if there is any light being illuminated on the lp, if not, the stop always results in a warning for the lp lamp out, but a citation will be issued for other violations or if they bulb is a different color, such as blue, green, red, etc.
Use common sense and you will avoid most law enforcement personnel.

If you're worried about getting hassled, you could try one of these... http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-LED-TAG-L...28?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item35b52a50fc

That link is from the UK, I know you can find them in the US and for just a few dollars, but it's too early to be searching all over ebay. I had one on mine after I cut the tail and it worked pretty well, just stuck it on with some double sided tape.

I know it looks like it only lit up the top 2 inches, but it did work when it was actually dark.

jriffe - I hear what you're saying, and understand cops "do there job." I was simply asking if anyone had any experience in VA. It is clearly a subjective question to put feelers out to anyone with any experience, and in no way is a reflection on how I ride. I feel as though I am within in the law; however, some may feel different.

The laws here in VA seem to be very similar to those in TX. Visible within 50', white in color...

upthemaiden - thanks for the link. That would probably work better and leave out any doubt.

2 bolt LED lights on mine. They seem to work well and are pretty inexpensive. You can find them on Ebay or at your local Cycle Gear (I think?)

I got my one bolt LED here locally 5-0... I will come up with another mounting option to accomodate another light. Would be much easier.

I'm leaving the HI Express on South Side this morning. D's always treats me right!

I just use my LED kit on my bike that I use under the translucent windscreen and airbox. I wired one to the back of the bike and have an orange plate light. If it's bright enough to view from a distance they usually don't mind.

take a look at your tail light lens cover, remove it and you'll find a clear lens around 2" long...remove your center tail section and cut out an area in the tail section to allow the clear lens to be seen, no need for the stock or LED license plate lights, you'll have enough light back there, unless your license plate is mounted under neath the seat pan
