Hi all, been lurking off and on for a good while and finally have a problem the search engine hasn't solved for me.

I recently bought a '03 XB9 From an insurance auction, It had been face-planted trashing the upper/lower triple, fairing, etc. The ecu had been crushed in the crash, so i bought a replacement from Evil-Bay along with the various other parts to make it complete.

Well, today was the big day, my axle came in got it installed and took a joy ride. Holy Spit this thing hauled ass. Substantially quicker than my '07 XB12 WTF?? I brought it back and started scratching my head when my brother noticed that the ignition cover spec'ed XB12 NOT XB9.

My concern is the install of the XB9 ecu I lost the crank safety circuit when i installed the xb9 ecu (Crushed ecu would crank but not fire.) Is it an option to run the engine long term with this ecu, with an ecmspy remap to get fueling right and a wiring change for the safty circuit?, or do i need to get an XB12 ecu and shelf the 9 unit?

And thank you for the educational and often hilarious banter on this forum.

I believe you should be able to put the 12 maps and timing in it and it work. Not sure how it would be running on a 9 fuel map though. I may have a 12 ECM of you would rather use it

The belts in 03 from what I've heard make the bike pull very hard and fast, but this also caused them to snap. never ridden. One though. Interesting about tje ecm though

How did u buy it on an insurance auction?? (ive been looking into this)

Interested in selling the front fairing? I need a crashed one..

Welcome[up]

so r u saying it's a 1203cc motor in a 984cc bike? the 9 and 12 maps are different. i suspect the differences are in fuel load and timing and are subtle...but they are different.

I'm pretty sure I've seen 03 registered XB12's. Mine was made in 03 but registered in 04. This is XB12R btw.

They didn't make an XB12 in 2003 either as it debuted in '04

Correct! The 1203 wasnt available until 04 MY. The 984 was the only engine option in 03 MY.

This is XB12R btw

If its a R then its a 04 MY but built in 03, or I guess it could be like said above a 03 xb9r with a 1203 transplant.

Thanks for all the info ya'all. I am gonna pull the prom and compare it to my 07 XB12 to see how much difference there is. If it can be determined what year the motor is I will be on the hunt for a OEM eprom image to start from. I am going to look through the pile of rubble and see if the ecu case from the bike has the sticker still on it. (fingers crossed)

The numbers between frame and motor don't match so I assume its a hybrid. The frame was built in Nov 03 and the engine number is 145000249 if someone has a magic decoder ring.

Crazy, Pm me and we'll work it out.

If it's a 12 it would have the bigger, one piece throttle body, and larger headers. Might help you narrow down what you have.

Holy ****

Lurking may be an understatement!

Registered in 07 with 3 post and still around. Might have a record here.

Good luck figuring it out.[up]

Simple but, is the frame grey or silver? The engine numbers may not match the frame numbers regardless. they built tons of engines and tons of frames, then threw them together. You should be able to look the engine ID numbers up to determine what it is. If the frame and swing arm are silver, the bike is most likely an xb9r, but that doesn't rule out that the engine was changed out.

Go with the cover is just different, it happens.

'03 ECM is the same that year whether stock or race. Same chip, different map.

Later years went with separate ECMs.

The vin on your case the third & fourth no should be engine type. 02 = 984 cc & 03 = 1203 cc. It should start with 2 letters also a Firebolt should start with AX for the first 2 stamped on the case.

I had forgotten about the color differences, it is for sure a hybrid, the swing-arm is polished but black/grey around the shock mount and the rear wheel is black also, but the frame and front wheel is magnesium. My Brother got the number for me I will look myself tomorrow evening for the letters.
Guess I should call the State police and double check the engine number, as i am planning to repair/pimp and resell with reconstructed papers.
Until this afternoon,,,,, I had an "incident" on it, was out doing a bit of logging to see how far out the maps were and in my distraction getting everything set up while sitting on bike idling, I forgot to put up the fkn kickstand....Duh so the obvious result was me scooting on the stand in the first left turn at about 50 and lowsiding then highhsiding luckly it was in a large grassy shoulder, still rashed upper arm impacted my shoulder blade good, and basicly cut off the end of my left index finger with the clutch lever, three on, one off for Real! I never did understand the blade levers they sell on Ebay. Sadistic...

Anyways, I know I broke the upper triple and God only knows what else, hope to see tomorrow after the orthopedic determines if i get to keep my digit, or I change my handle to Stubbytech. But I DiD get new Pics For The Wall-O-Pain, LOL
