Oil is like everything else you buy... You get what you pay for. Stock up when it's on sale if you want to save.

But, hey, it's your bike. Buy the cheap shit, use a Fram filter, and let me know how that works out.

recently in my shop:
1-2003 sportster...59,224 miles...original owner...steady diet of castrol 20-50 and walmart supertech oil filters. still runs strong and engine internals look virtually new.
2-2005 lightning S...61,800 miles....2nd owner...steady diet of rotella T and ProLine 20-50 (Pep Boys house brand) oil. runs strong and engine internals solid. both bikes pampered and well maintained.
so i'd say for those particular 2 owners economy priced oil and filters worked out just fine.

^^ They don't make enough power TO hurt anything!! This was something like my old boss used to say to some guys who always had these engines built by someone else! Now...before everyone comes out and says I'm a 'hater'!! I RIDE ONE TOO!! And love the thing! Just having a little fun at our expense being a wise-ass! i'm on my 11th XB. always have between 4-6 of them in my stable. i'm frugal so i don't go crazy with super expensive lubricants. amsoil in the primary and any quality 20-50 or shell rotella T in the motor along with $3 toyota yaris oil filters has always served me well. i've accumulated close to 80,000 miles on XB's to date and never had any oil related issues. but then again i pamper my bikes and service them regularly.

I would never claim to have a "great mind", but it's clearly thinking along your lines regardless, lunatic. I've been using whatever JASO oil happens to be on sale (often that's Rotella, which is one of the best kept secrets in motorcycling!) & plain old automotive oil filters (often Fram) for over 20 years & 1/4 million kilometers of riding, & I've yet to experience any kind of lube-related issue. Indeed, I don't believe I've ever even come across a valve clearance being out of spec...

I've read hundreds of threads like this on dozens of motorcycle sites and there's one thing I've NEVER seen: An actual, documented case of oil brand causing an engine failure or one engine running significantly longer by using "brand X" vs. "brand Y". Never......not once.

Buy a known brand (the unbranded stuff that's been sitting on the shelf at the gas station since 1983 is probably not a good idea) in the proper weight and change it regularly. Other than that, don't sweat it. [up]

Some oils are better than others but the fact is any of them will do their job. It's not necessary to use amsoil, royal purple, or even synthetic in general, but it's become cost effective over the past 10 years or so. So it's a wise choice for the best wear protection.
