Hey guys I have 09 bolt.
When im decelerating (engine brake) mostly 1st, 2nd a little in 3rd I hear some whineing noise comeing from the primary. It started like a week ago. Each days been getting worse so parked it today.
Drained the primary and its smells burnt allmost like really over used gear oil that goes into a differential on a truck. I stress it smells BAD!
Ill have to pick a couple tools to get primary gear off.
But the teeth look ok. No broke teeth or worn down.
I was getting some slipping in 2nd at WOT.

Any ideas guys ? Please lol?

I have about 700 miles until time for oil change.
The rear primary gear if u grab the teeth you can move that part of the primary a little bit Not shure if thats normal couldnt imagine it being normal.

how often do you change primary oil, and adjust the primary chain? Could possibly be the stator burning up

I change primary everytime I change motor oil.
I dont think its stator seems to be charging really well.
Castrol v-twin 20w-50

Could the smell be from the clutch?
Also the drain plug had a bunch of metal on it not huge chunks but little ill post pic tommrow of drain plug.

Also forgot to mention the whinning noise still continued even after I squezzed the clutch and coasted

you mentioned whining in 1st gear so can we assume this noise can be heard in the 10-20mph range? if so, find a hill in a quiet area. with motor off and in neutral coast down and listen. still whining? it's downwind of the motor output shaft and stator area. not whining? it's up front in the stator/rotor/engine shaft area. oil smells like burned electrical junk? it's the stator.

Can I look at the stator and be able to tell?
You don't need to physically look at it. Using the procedures in the manual, and a multi meter, check that resistance accross the stator coils is 0.1 to 0.3 ohms, and voltage output is 40-55 volts @ 2000 rpm, as measured at the VR/stator connector under the front drive sprocket cover.

metal pieces will be from the clutch, chain, and gears. the stator shouldn't leave any metal deposits

I just figured with the metal pieces I coul look at it and see.
You should have a peek at the manual. Even once you get the primary cover off, the stator is still under a cover that requires clutch removal to view.

Within reason, the metal debris on the magnetic drain plug is normal, unless of course you're seeing chunks the size of grapeseeds or larger...

Why are people even suggesting to test the stator? Thats eletrical and for it to produce a loud enough eletrical whing is just not likely.
Did you change the fluid again? If yes did noise change? If no, change it and see what happens. Have you adjusted the primary change to see a change?

You said something about movement when grabbing the clutch assembly teeth, id suggest remove the primary cover and get a visual, inspect the chain tensioner, and the clutch setup shouldnt have movement, potentially a bad bearing there.

still whining? it's downwind of the motor output shaft and stator area. not whining? it's up front in the stator/rotor/engine shaft area.
Lunatic this confused me? So no matter what its the stator?

I no I was planning on removeing the clutch and all of that. My primary cover is allready off.

When it started whining I checked and adjusted the chance it was a little outta spec not much.

I figured bad bearing to when I could move it.

the thing im grabbing is what has play in it.

the smell of the I rember from one of my first four whellers I had.
Yamaha blaster 200 and then oil smelled just like this and the clutches in that thing were shot.

ok how exctley do I get the clutch apart. do I pull the whole assembly off the bike then take it all apart?
im reading in the service manual you need some type of sping compressor?

It's not unheard of for clutch plates to fracture or shatter. Perhaps that's what's causing your whining sound (?).

I think some folks have figured out ways to get the clutch apart with a home-made compressor, but I've always used a proper tool; easy!

Figured out the movement.
Its where the clutch basket slides in.

I pulled the clutch and gear off the back. From looking dosent look baf except for the blueing.
