Mounting a Voltage Gauge on a bolt?

good morning mark. glad you made it home safely but know you were "on edge" till you got there. is this your original regulator or are you replacing for 2nd time? just curious. i'm telling you son...an evening spent installing 1 of these little $5 units is the single best peace of mind items you can put on your buell.
Yes for sure I was on edge. this will be the second regulator... But I have an update; I went out to troubleshoot it this morning. Verified it was not charging, it was running at 11.5, so started to remove all the wiring to get to the stater connector. well the stater is good, so i expect to buy a regulator and start putting it all back together. So I apply dielectric grease to make the connectors back apart easier when the new part comes, well I start it again and check it just for reassuring and now its charging, go figure. I think this monitor will bring peace of mind

Mark sounds like you may just have a connection problem. I just had a similar problem haven't solved completely but looks to just be connections. I got a lot of help for a posted I started here check it out may help you too.

I'm going to order the updated 77 connector kit and install a meter to monitor the battery and go from there before I start forking out money.

What's up with the screw above the gauge cluster??
I dunno... not stock?

Mark: My bike was not charging when I first got it, either. I think the previous owner didn't have a clue (though he was a nice guy). He thought the battery was going dead because the bike sat too much... plus it was a cheap Walmart battery (replaced with a decent one since then). I updated the connector. I also bought the correct crimping tools from a tool company on line. I think it can be done with patience and good needle nose pliers but the extra 30 or so dollars I spent on the two crimpers made it easier. On that thought...

Lunatic, I think you're right but:

1. cost of voltage regulator - $154.55 (americansportbike)
2. time to install - about an hour if you don't do anything dumb
3. peace of mind - priceless!

I already had the new regulator, so I went ahead and installed it. The dumb thing I did when I updated the connector a while back was that I reversed the male and female ends (wiring was correct though... I was careful about that) so I had to change the end on the harness again to the correct one when I put in the new regulator. What a dope! Final analysis: updating the connector resulted in consistant charging as opposed to readings that were sometimes above 12v. The difference with the new regulator is that what seems to be the peak voltage (I rev the engine to 2K rpm's for that measurement) is now consistently above 14v. With the old regulator and updated connector it was mostly in the 13's. Maybe it doesn't matter, but I'm worrying less.

mustang....here see mine doesn't have that...strange:

Well, it's a "dome-top" hex bolt - perfectly centered.... looks totally stock. I installed a new headlight assembly a couple of weeks ago and everything under the front fairing appeared stock. I did notice the EMC had yellow writing that read "2003 stock EMC". Maybe it's not the original? Maybe a previous owner had messed around with things and at some point it was returned to stock? When I get around to the HID upgrade, I'll have the fairing off again and will check it out. Sorry to highjack your thread, FlaX!

...weird. "emc"?...you mean ecm?

I'm interested in what FlaX comes up with, I might be interested in doing a mod like this.

Yeah, that's what I meant! It was an easy mod. I would have liked to have a meter that actually displayed numbers, but I'm happy with what I've got. I've voltage tested the system many times both at idle and revs so I have a pretty good idea how the meter compares to the measured voltage.

I bought this one because it was in Florida (close to me and didn't have patients)

This is all it is with the wires split and added about 6+ feet of wire connected with a piece of heat shrink over the connection.

You really only need extra wire for the ground so it would be just as easy to buy the cheaper one and add to the ground yourself. Very simple install.

Any Idea if these are water proof, I dont ever intend to get caught in the rain, but it happens more than i expect...

That is a very good question.

I'm not sure but I personally try not to ride if there is much of a chance of rain which is almost every summer afternoon here in Florida.[sad]

I will send the guy I bought mine from a message and ask though.

I'll post my findings.

^damn man I've been riding to work every day this week and getting soaked each day lol.

I'm just happy to be riding, really. Once I tear my bike down in a few weeks who knows how long it'll be until I'll be riding again :D
